Comet is Perplexity's first AI browser. With Google Chrome still dominating despite competitive efforts from Microsoft and DuckDuckGo, the developer hopes AI can make a difference.

Using the Chromium architecture similar to Google Chrome, Comet focuses on an AI assistant, using models developed by Perplexity. This assistant supports web browsing, interacts with users and replaces Google Search. Recently, OpenAI also followed this direction when releasing the Atlas browser.

Comet has just been released for free after a limited time on paid subscriptions. While limited, it could be a glimpse into the future of how we interact with search engines.

Summary of content, site search

The biggest difference between Comet and a traditional browser is the AI assistant. From the main interface, you can enter commands to make the AI work, below are widgets such as clocks, stock prices or weather, allowing you to add/remove and change the position.

Comet's AI assistant supports a variety of tasks, activated via three buttons in the upper right corner of the browser. Each button's function includes summarizing the website's content, activating voice mode, or turning on the chatbot interface (Assistant).

With a keyboard shortcut or Assistant button, users can ask the assistant to summarize the content of articles, emails, or social media comments based on the tab they are currently open in. Not only does it shorten, Comet's AI allows for table presentation, listing, and conclusion drawing.

In case of needing to research or compare multiple sources, AI will synthesize and compare the content of the tabs, thereby providing comparison tables, charts with specific comments as requested.

Thanks to its ability to query and reference information, Perplexity is Comet's default search engine instead of Google. Users can enter search keywords in the address bar, and AI will return results including links, summaries, and citations.

For example, with the question “Where is the best price for the iPhone 17 Pro Max 2 TB in orange?”, Comet takes about 12 seconds to infer, search, and return results. Meanwhile, ChatGPT with the GPT-5 model takes about 36 seconds, and Gemini 2.5 Pro takes 35 seconds.

If you are not satisfied with the results or want to learn more, you can continue to ask the chatbot for related information such as creating a configuration comparison table, suitable capacity according to your needs, or based on suggested questions.

Compared to Google Search, Perplexity has fewer results. The app does not support filtering results by time, language, or image. If you need a more in-depth search, just switch to Google Search in the settings, or type “ !g ” before searching.

Another example is asking Comet to summarize the video currently playing on YouTube. The app will provide key details surrounding the video's content, even translating it into Vietnamese if the original command was in Vietnamese.

Tested with a 7-minute video in English, Comet took 16 seconds to summarize, while Gemini took about 11 seconds. Compared to Comet, Google's AI provided more detailed content and specific timelines.

Using the Perplexity platform, the chatbot supports modes such as Deep Research or Labs, but requires a fee. For basic users, Comet's AI is perfectly suitable for quickly looking up, summarizing and synthesizing information from available topics.

Hands-free web browsing

Not just a simple answer, Comet's AI supports connecting services like Gmail or Google Calendar, becoming a tool for managing daily work and plans.

Users can ask Comet to summarize unread emails and filter out emails that need to be processed urgently. The tool will summarize and process them on demand, saving time without having to read each email in detail.

If the email contains an important agenda, you can ask Comet to create an appointment in Google Calendar. The application allows you to schedule emails, compose content, filter and unsubscribe promotional emails through agent mode.

Similar to ChatGPT or Copilot, agent mode allows Comet to manipulate the browser on behalf of the user, helping to automate complex or repetitive processes.

For example, with the command "Find the cheapest flight tickets from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi , departure date October 11 and return date October 13, prioritizing afternoon and evening flights", Comet will automatically access the ticket booking website, filter the results and provide a suitable list.

During the process, the application also explains each step including screenshots of the website, recorded data and next steps. Comet will stop when it needs to confirm personal information in case the website requests it.

With the above command, Comet took about 10 minutes to execute, while ChatGPT took 15 minutes. Initially, the tool returned incorrect results because the agent mode was not activated. When the author requested the operation on a specific website, the browser used the agent.

In another example, Comet was asked to visit a discount page on Amazon, find items under $20 , and add a few items to his cart. The whole process took about 10 minutes.

Thanks to the Memory Recall feature, users can get results from the previous conversation as information for the next command.

Comet’s AI can also perform tasks over time. For example, if you ask “Use Flipboard to compile the latest 5-6 news stories about Apple. Do this at exactly 10:30 today,” the tool will wait for the right time, then visit the requested website to retrieve the information.

The only case where Comet failed was when asking to search for a product on Shopee, filter by price and then add it to the cart. According to the explanation, this platform uses a live price update system so the AI cannot “see” the data.

In general, Comet's agent feature can perform many tasks on behalf of the user, although the efficiency and accuracy depend on the detail of the command and the openness of the website. Computer performance will be affected when the agent is active.

Even though it has Vietnamese, Comet's voice mode is not too impressive as it only supports some basic operations, and the AI's voice still sounds robotic.

Interesting experience

Because it uses Chromium, Comet's interface is quite friendly if you are familiar with Google Chrome or Firefox. Saved websites and login accounts are fully supported when switching from an older browser. Some extensions may not work as expected, although most are compatible.

Compared to Chrome, the AI assistant interface is located on the right side of the screen, making it easier to access. Thanks to AI integration, Comet supports managing open tabs on demand, such as grouping tabs by topic, closing tabs that have not been accessed for a long time.

In addition to Perplexity models like Sonar or Claude, Comet allows switching to models like Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-5 or Grok 4. However, this feature requires a subscription to Perplexity Pro or higher. The browser also has a built-in ad blocker, which helps increase privacy and page loading speed.

During the experience, users may experience lag if the computer configuration is low, or when the agent is working with many complex tasks. Some tasks still cause the agent to error, fail or take a long time.

Users still need to be careful about the accuracy of AI in complex tasks. Because of its deep operation, AI can raise concerns when collecting a lot of data, history and different communication objects.

By default, chats containing personal information are only accessible for one month, but users can turn this limit off if they need long-term access.

The next drawback comes from the fact that Comet does not have a mobile version, and cannot synchronize history and websites accessed from computer to phone. The developer said that he is building a version of Comet on iOS and Android.

Overall, the AI assistant on Comet offers a fresh experience. Not just using AI alone, this is a promising solution to help optimize daily work, through agent mode and automation.

In today's world, simple, concise, and effective answers are a big plus as people consume a lot of information. While there are privacy concerns, this is an exciting change for those willing to interact with their web browsers in a new way.
