From "postman" to smart logistics

August 15 marks the 80th anniversary of the development of the Vietnam Postal Service, a long journey from handwritten letters spanning half a century to packages processed and sorted in just a few seconds thanks to automation technology. From a traditional "postman", Vietnam Post has now become the "blood vessel" of the digital economy, taking on the role of connecting people, goods and data nationwide.

Currently, Vietnam Post operates the largest postal network in the country with 13,000 transaction points, 700 exploitation centers, 4,000 means of transport, 100 North-South container trains and more than 40,000 employees. This infrastructure covers all regions, from modern cities to remote areas, borders, islands where there are people, there are Post Office footprints.

Not only ensuring good political tasks, Vietnam Post also plays a role in maintaining the flow of material alongside the flow of data, two fundamental elements of the digital economy. The mission of "People's Post Office" is therefore renewed by technology, with the aspiration to connect everyone, every region, every time, every place in a unified digital space.

Technology - the key to innovation

Technology is considered the "golden key" that opens a new stage of development for Vietnam Post. The company has now self-developed and mastered up to 80% of the software system and information technology solutions in the entire network, a big step forward, helping to proactively upgrade, customize, optimize costs and ensure data security.

In addition, Vietnam Post invests heavily in automation, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI). At 7 regional exploitation centers, a large-capacity automatic sorting line system is equipped, integrating barcode technology and AI image analysis, helping to identify and route mail accurately in real time, processing tens of thousands of mails per hour with almost absolute accuracy.

Not stopping there, AI, IoT, Big Data technologies are also deeply applied in warehouse transportation management: from data analysis, forecasting load demand to optimizing routes and monitoring journeys in real time. Thanks to that, businesses save significant costs, shorten the entire process time, improve accuracy and labor productivity.

Looking to the future, Vietnam Post continues to invest in drones, delivery robots, AVG delivery robots and autonomous vehicles, gradually forming a smart, automatic and sustainable logistics network to meet the development trend of logistics 4.0 in the world .

If in the past, post offices were only associated with letters, today, Vietnam Post is strongly transforming itself into a comprehensive digital service ecosystem. Each post office is not only a place to receive and deliver goods, but also a "digital touchpoint" - where people can fulfill most of their essential needs in just one service space.

There, customers can send goods, shop for consumer goods, carry out public administrative procedures, use digital financial - banking - insurance services, or order regional agricultural products via nongsan.buudien.vn, conduct e-commerce transactions via taphoa.vn, and make secure payments on the PostPay platform.

By digitizing processes and integrating multiple platforms, Vietnam Post is turning each post office into a "community digital utility station", where people in rural, remote and isolated areas can access digital services like in urban areas. This is also how the business contributes to narrowing the digital gap, promoting financial inclusion and supporting e-government at the grassroots level.

This model not only enhances user experience, but also redefines the way people access public services, commerce and digital finance, helping Vietnam Post continue to play an important role in the national digital transformation process.

By 2030, Vietnam Post aims to become a leading technology enterprise in the field of postal services - logistics - digital finance, while actively contributing to the construction of national data infrastructure and the development of the digital economy and digital society.

The enterprise identifies four strategic pillars including: Modern logistics, digital postal finance, combined online-offline retail distribution, and online public administrative services.

On that basis, Vietnam Post deploys the Logistics 4.0 digital transformation framework, modernizes infrastructure, optimizes operations and extensively applies advanced technologies such as AI, IoT, Big Data. At the same time, the enterprise promotes digital service models, digital finance, digital payments, and forms a digital logistics network to support small and medium-sized enterprises, business households and e-commerce towards the goal of green and sustainable development.

By 2030, Vietnam Post strives to achieve digital service revenue of VND 1,000 billion, logistics mechanization rate of 80%, digitalization of 99% of products and 100% of processes, and application of 100% of AI and Big Data technology in production and customer care.

These goals not only demonstrate a long-term vision, but also affirm the determination to transform from a traditional postal enterprise to a digital infrastructure technology enterprise, contributing to the formation of a smart national logistics platform and a comprehensive digital service ecosystem.

Vietnam Post is not only changing with technology, but is also redefining the nature of the postal industry from transporting letters and goods to transporting data, knowledge and digital values.

In the digital transformation era, each package sent is not just a physical item, but a link in the digital economy, part of the flow connecting people, businesses and the Government.

From the "postman" of 80 years ago, to the "digital infrastructure technology enterprise" today, Vietnam Post is proving that: Innovation through technology is the only way to maintain the mission of connection and development. Technology and digital transformation not only change the way of operation, but are also reshaping the position of Vietnam Post as the country's essential digital infrastructure in the new era.
