Hanoi: Enhancing the value of grapefruit trees, aiming for sustainable development

Over the years, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment has made continuous efforts to promote and enhance the value of local specialty grapefruit products. With support from the authorities, many cooperatives and farmers have introduced new grapefruit varieties into production in a safe direction, bringing high economic efficiency and meeting the increasingly strict demands of the market.

The benefits of safe farming

Duc Hau Clean Agriculture Cooperative has an area of ​​nearly 3 hectares of grapefruit growing area that meets VietGAP standards, harvesting from 30,000 to 40,000 fruits each year. What is special is that most of the products have been ordered by customers before harvest time. Director Le Huu Dien said that grapefruit grown in a safe way is not only less susceptible to pests and diseases but also has superior quality: beautiful shiny yellow skin, fragrant pulp, plump segments, sweet taste, and becomes sweeter the longer it is kept.

Thanks to brand building and participation in trade promotion fairs, the cooperative's grapefruit products have had stable output. This is a clear demonstration that the application of modern farming techniques associated with safety standards has brought high economic value to farmers.

In order to expand the grapefruit growing model in a safe direction, the Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center has implemented two production models associated with product consumption on an area of ​​17 hectares. Special grapefruit varieties such as Dien grapefruit, Tan Lac red grapefruit, Tam Van grapefruit and Tho Bach Ha grapefruit were selected to apply production processes that meet VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards.

The center also guides farmers in using water-saving irrigation systems to improve productivity and product quality. In addition, 40 trainees, who are typical officials and farmers, have been trained in depth on grapefruit planting and care techniques. Training contents include supplementary pollination, microbial organic fertilizer application, pruning, pruning flowers and fruits, using fruit bags, as well as safe plant protection measures.

Currently, the grapefruit gardens participating in the model are growing well, most of the trees are in the fruit development stage. This shows that the application of modern techniques not only helps improve the quality but also increases the commercial value of grapefruit trees.

Ensuring stable development

According to Director of Hanoi Agricultural Extension Center Nguyen Thi Kim Que, the implementation of grapefruit growing models in Hanoi still faces many difficulties. Small-scale and fragmented production is one of the biggest obstacles. In addition, the strong development of grapefruit growing areas in neighboring provinces also causes prices to decrease during the harvest season. This leads to a situation where some gardeners in Hanoi are not interested in caring for grapefruit trees or even cut them down to switch to growing other types of trees.

To ensure stable development of grapefruit trees, Hanoi aims to maintain the grapefruit growing area at about 7,800 hectares by 2025. At the same time, the locality will focus on improving the quality and diversifying the grapefruit variety structure to extend the harvest time.

The Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment will also strengthen training and coaching on management, planting techniques, care, harvesting, processing and preserving grapefruit. The establishment of geographical indication protection, product brands associated with traceability codes and QR codes will help clarify the origin of products, creating trust for consumers.

In addition, Hanoi will continue to promote trade and promote safe grapefruit products according to VietGAP standards. Linking with businesses to combine agricultural production and eco-tourism is also expected to increase the economic value of grapefruit trees.

The specialty grapefruit tree is not only the pride of Hanoi agriculture but also brings great economic value to local people. With the attention and investment in the right direction from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, along with the consensus of cooperatives and farmers, Hanoi grapefruit tree promises to continue to affirm its position in the domestic and international markets.
