Messi proud of three months playing for Inter Miami

American Lionel Messi boasts of winning the Leagues Cup, reaching the final of the American Cup and fighting to the final rounds of the MLS Eastern Conference.

"Proud of everything Inter Miami has achieved this season," Messi wrote on Instagram on October 22, shortly after Inter Miami's final match of the 2023 season. "With the efforts of everyone, we won the Leagues Cup, the first title in our history, reached the final of the American Cup, and fought for the MLS Cup playoffs until the last moment."

Messi also thanked the Inter Miami fans, the people of Miami and other supporters. He hopes the team will improve next year, to compete better. "We will surely continue to have great moments together like the past months," Messi added. "A hug to everyone."

Messi has been playing for Inter Miami since July 21, after joining as a free agent. Before that, the 36-year-old striker's contract with PSG expired. Shortly after moving, Messi helped Inter Miami win the Leagues Cup, a mixed tournament between MLS clubs and the Mexican championship. It was the club's first title in five years. Messi personally scored 10 goals in that journey, also winning the Golden Boot award.

Messi also helped Inter Miami reach the final of the American Cup after a 5-4 penalty shootout win over FC Cincinnati, who lead the 2023 MLS standings (3-3 draw after 120 minutes). In total, in 14 games for his new team, the 36-year-old striker scored 11 goals and assisted three.

Messi's triumphant run in the US was only halted by injury. During the World Cup winner's absence, Inter Miami lost 2-1 to Houston Dynamo in the American Cup final and several other games. They finished 14th out of 15 teams in the MLS Eastern Conference, meaning they missed out on a top-nine playoff spot.

Inter Miami will play two friendly matches in China on November 5 and 8. After that, the team will take a break until January 2024, then return to prepare for the new season starting at the end of February.

According to media reports, Inter Miami could loan Messi to a European club during the winter transfer window. However, the Argentine striker has denied this.
