Mr. Trump nominates new FBI director

US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen close ally Kash Patel as Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the incoming administration.

US President-elect Donald Trump on November 30 announced his nominee for FBI Director, one of the last important positions chosen by his second-term administration. Accordingly, former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense Kash Patel was nominated to replace current FBI Director Christopher Wray.

"Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and warrior for America First who has dedicated his career to exposing corruption, protecting justice, and the American people," Mr. Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social on the evening of November 30, US time.

The president-elect praised Mr. Patel for his pivotal role in exposing the “Russia hoax” and as a champion of truth, accountability, and the Constitution.

"The FBI will end the growing crime epidemic in America, dismantle criminal migrant gangs, and stop the scourge of human and drug trafficking across our border. Kash will work under our great Attorney General Pam Bondi to bring pride, courage, and integrity to the FBI," Trump wrote.

According to the New York Post , Mr. Patel served as a federal prosecutor in the Justice Department 's national security agency and held many national security and intelligence positions in the first Trump administration, such as an official on the National Security Council.

According to The New York Times , Mr. Patel is a favorite of Mr. Trump’s supporters. He is close to Mr. Trump’s views on the need to purge bias from most of the national security and law enforcement agencies and to deal with those involved in unfair investigations of Mr. Trump and his allies.

The FBI director has no term limits and must be confirmed by the US Senate. If approved, Mr. Patel would replace current FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Mr Trump nominated Mr Wray in 2017 after firing his predecessor, James Comey, who had investigated figures related to the leader. However, the president-elect has expressed dissatisfaction with Mr Wray and has suggested that the FBI director should resign. According to The New York Times , Mr Trump's early nomination of the FBI director before taking office shows that he wants to force Mr Wray to resign.
