Speaking at a press conference, General Kukula stressed the need to prepare for full-scale conflict rather than asymmetrical ones. He also said that from August the number of troops guarding Poland's eastern border would increase from 6,000 to 8,000, with a reserve force of 9,000 soldiers that could be mobilized within 48 hours.

In May, Poland announced a 10 billion zloty ($2.5 billion) “Eastern Shield” program to bolster defenses along its borders with Belarus and Russia, scheduled for completion by 2028.

The situation at the border with Belarus became tense in 2021 when migrants began to flock there after Belarus opened travel agencies in the Middle East, creating a new route into Europe.

In response to Russia's attack on Ukraine, Poland has increased its defense spending to more than 4% of GDP this year. Currently, the Polish army has about 190,000 soldiers and is expected to increase to 300,000 in the next few years.
