China's Ministry of Commerce said on October 15 that it had sent a request to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for consultations on India's subsidies for electric vehicles and batteries.
China's Commerce Ministry said India's measures amounted to import substitution subsidies, which are prohibited by the WTO.
The notice also asserted: “These measures give an unfair competitive advantage to Indian industries and harm China’s interests. China will take resolute measures to effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its domestic industry.”
In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce also called on India to “comply with its obligations under the WTO framework and immediately correct its wrongdoings.”
In terms of global electric vehicle sales, September deliveries of electric vehicles, including both battery-powered and hybrid vehicles, increased 24% year-on-year. Experts say that global electric vehicle (EV) sales hit a record high, thanks to growing Chinese consumer interest in new models and the growing popularity of battery-powered vehicles in Europe.
Global sales of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose 24% year-on-year to 2.1 million in September 2025, according to London-based consultancy Rho Motion. This is the first time sales have topped 2 million and surpassed the previous record of 1.9 million in December. Sales also grew 20% compared to August.
The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released data on October 14 that reflects the growth momentum of electric vehicle sales in mainland China, the world's largest electric vehicle market. About 50 Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers contributed to a record 826,000 fully electric vehicles sold in September, up 28.5% year-on-year. Including hybrids, the Chinese market saw a total of 1.3 million electric vehicles delivered last month, up 15.5% year-on-year and accounting for 62% of the global total.
Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the CPCA ( a government -backed industry alliance), said: "China's dominance in electric vehicles has helped the country's auto industry increase its market share in the global market. In the field of new energy vehicles, Chinese companies are increasingly expanding their influence globally."
