A tourist area in Lijiang city (Yunnan province, China) is causing fierce controversy after a series of photos of the works on display there were posted on social networks by tourists.
These are works with strange shapes such as a centipede with a human face or a girl with three faces.

On Chinese social media platforms, many tourists share photos taken in a tourist area called Wilderness Land. This place is promoted as a “fairytale world in the middle of nature”. However, instead of feeling like a dreamy place like a fairyland, many works make viewers shudder with fear.
The most controversial of these is the human-faced centipede sculpture. The body of the sculpture resembles a centipede with many legs. While the head is a human statue.
Some other works are distorted, with three faces or deformed limbs. Many visitors who have visited the tourist area have compared it to a "horror gallery" that can scare the faint-hearted.
"Seeing these statues in the middle of the night will probably haunt me and I won't be able to sleep," one account commented on Douyin.
"These works cannot be called artistic design because they only serve to scare viewers," a comment on Weibo received agreement from many opinions.

However, many people think that the criticism is too harsh. Some people defending the tourist area said that the experience at the Wild Kingdom gives them the feeling of entering the world of Japanese animation.
In response to the wave of criticism, on October 11, a representative of the tourist area officially spoke up to explain. According to this person, most of the photos circulating on social networks were intentionally edited by some travel bloggers (people who share travel knowledge) to make the scene appear darker and more terrifying than it actually is.
Along with that, the representative confirmed that the Wild Kingdom tourist area was originally a project built by a designer named Kieu Tieu Dao with the purpose of giving it to his daughter.
The designer wanted to create a warm and romantic fairy tale kingdom. However, the resort representative also admitted that some of the designs were a bit exaggerated.
"If visitors come here on a sunny day, it will be suitable for taking check-in photos. In addition, visitors should find out in advance whether they are suitable for this art style or not, to avoid expecting more than they imagine," the representative shared.
However, the centipede statue with a human face still attracted millions of comments on many Chinese social media platforms, dividing public opinion into two opposing views.
One side sees it as "creepy mutant art". But there are also opinions that this is "a strange but creative fairy tale world".
In fact, this is not the first time that works displayed in tourist areas in China have received mixed responses.

At the Jiuhuangshan tourist area in Mianyang, Sichuan, the management board built a bridge connecting two mountains in 2019. However, on both sides of this bridge, they placed two giant statues simulating two women wearing ethnic minority clothes.
The Chinese public described the two statues as looking scary as if they were "welcoming tourists to hell".
