Apple is preparing to merge divisions and expand the roles of some leaders, according to Bloomberg . This is to accommodate the upcoming retirement of Chief Operating Officer (COO) Jeff Williams.

Specifically, Director of Services Eddy Cue will be tasked with overseeing the health and fitness division, while Director of Software Engineering Craig Federighi will oversee the Apple Watch's watchOS operating system.

Each leader has decades of experience working at Apple, building influence and contributing to many important products. Williams, in particular, will leave at the end of the year after serving as COO since 2015.

Since announcing his retirement in July, Williams has handed over the company's supply chain, operations, AppleCare customer support and China operations to his successor, Sabih Khan.

Cue's move to head up the health division comes as Apple prepares to launch its Health+ service, a move that also comes as part of the company's plan to merge its health and fitness divisions.

Previously, the health and wellness teams were headed by Sumbul Desai and Jay Blahnik, respectively, reporting to Williams. Under the new structure, the merged department will be headed by Desai, with Cue as the boss, and Blahnik reporting to Desai.

Craig Federighi, a fan favorite at product launches, will also oversee watchOS, his second such appointment this year. Previously, Apple asked Federighi to oversee the Siri team and visionOS, the operating system for Vision Pro.

Hardware chief John Ternus also has a new role, with full control over Apple Watch hardware engineering.

Williams also manages the hardware and software design teams at Apple. In the latest announcement, the people responsible for the two teams, Molly Anderson and Alan Dye, will report directly to CEO Tim Cook after Williams leaves.

Apple is also set to see more changes in its leadership. According to Bloomberg , the company is looking to replace AI chief John Giannandrea. Meanwhile, head of environment and government relations Lisa Jackson is considering leaving.

Johny Srouji, the head of the chip division, is also considering his future at Apple. His most recent achievement was the C1 cellular modem.

John Ternus is considered a strong candidate to replace CEO Tim Cook, who has held the top position at Apple since 2011. At 50, Ternus is the youngest member of the executive board. He has recently been given more authority.

Desai's management of Blahnik's fitness team follows an internal investigation. Blahnik was previously sued by a former employee who accused him of inappropriate behavior and creating a toxic work environment.

Desai will report to Cue, underscoring the company’s ambitions to enter the health and wellness space. In 2020, it launched Fitness+, a service that offers exercise videos and wellness programs.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Health+ package will integrate AI, allowing users to manage their health through personalized nutrition, exercise and sleep recommendations. Apple plans to launch this service in 2026.
