Over the past 10 days, a series of Hollywood stars have worn designs that have not yet been officially released by the new Creative Directors.
Dior under Jonathan Anderson let Greta Lee and Alba Rohrwacher try on dresses inspired by the legendary bar jacket and a navy blue dress with padded bust.
Meanwhile, Tilda Swinton revealed Matthieu Blazy's elegant yet playful Chanel look with white wide-leg pants and a CC button-down top.
Unlike the strict Cannes or the glamorous Oscars, the Venice red carpet is more “open”, giving stylists and stars the opportunity to experiment. Amanda Seyfried even wore Julia Roberts’ Versace look, which was considered a hit for both sustainability and the media.
According to fashion expert Henrik Lischke (Grazia), the “preview” of the collection in Venice is like the way the movie Barbie used to do its promotional campaign: “The more hype, the more attention.”
The strategy has also helped new names stand out. Dario Vitale, who was relatively unknown when he took over Versace in April, has been thrust into the spotlight thanks to surprise appearances by Julia Roberts and Seyfried.
Not everyone was thrilled. Some felt Versace was playing it too safe, and Anderson’s Dior designs “didn’t fit the Hollywood glamour.” But critic Amy Odell stressed: “It was just an appetizer. One or two appearances don’t tell the whole story.”
