Khanh Hoa faces African swine fever and avian flu at the same time: Nearly 61 tons of pigs destroyed

The epidemic situation in Khanh Hoa province is becoming complicated as both African swine fever (ASF) and avian influenza are spreading in many localities, posing a great challenge for prevention work.

According to a report compiled by the authorities, in just the first 10 days of October (from October 1 to 10), ASF broke out in 41 households in 9 communes and wards (including Nam Nha Trang, Cam Lam, Suoi Dau, Ninh Hoa...), with a total of 873 pigs forced to be destroyed, equivalent to more than 44.6 tons of meat products.

As of now, the cumulative damage is huge:

From July 1 to October 10, the whole province recorded 60 ASF outbreaks.

The total number of pigs destroyed was up to 1,159, with a weight of nearly 61 tons.

At the same time, bird flu also appeared in 7 households in 3 communes and wards since the end of September. This disease has caused the destruction of more than 1,000 chickens, estimated at nearly 2 tons of products. Although no new outbreaks of flu occurred during the period of October 4-10, the risk of a re-outbreak is still assessed at a high level.

Faced with the epidemic situation, Khanh Hoa Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine has drastically implemented measures to prevent and control the epidemic:

Emergency support: Distributing 8,000 liters of chemicals for large-scale disinfection and sterilization.

Large-scale vaccination: Vaccination of more than 3 million doses of avian influenza vaccine, of which 500,000 doses were supported by the state budget.

Inspect and handle thoroughly: Establish working groups to directly inspect localities with epidemics, request thorough handling, and prevent the spread as soon as the first case is detected.

Authorities also warned against violations, declaring that they would strictly handle cases of concealing the epidemic, failing to report, transporting or trading animals suspected of being infected. At the same time, coordination between the veterinary and local health sectors was strengthened to closely monitor and proactively prevent the risk of avian influenza spreading to humans.
