Luxury car brand Mercedes-Benz has just unveiled the Vision Iconic concept at Shanghai Fashion Week. This majestic luxury coupé combines bold new ideas with surprisingly elegant design. Featuring a "long" and low profile with a very long hood, the Vision Iconic is reminiscent of Mercedes sports cars from the past and present, such as the 300SL with gullwing doors, the SLS AMG and the AMG GT.
The new Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic also features the brand’s controversial “iconic” grille, which is chrome-plated and oversized. It’s bright but appropriate, reminiscent of the upright grilles of the Mercedes W108, W111, and the iconic 600 “Grosser.” The car has large, turbine-like wheels and flat door handles (for the rear-opening doors). The Vision Iconic’s jet-black “paint” is actually a solar-panel-like coating that is said to generate enough electricity to travel up to 7,500 miles a year. The solar panels also contain no rare earths or silicon and are easily recyclable. The entire interior is designed in the Art Deco style of the 1930s combined with modern technology, which Mercedes calls "super analogue". The idea is that the advanced autonomous driving system will turn the cabin into a high-end lounge, focusing more on creating an experience for the occupants.
To achieve its user-friendliness, the Vision Iconic features a cigar-shaped glass dashboard, called the Zeppelin, with a sophisticated stopwatch-inspired analog clock cluster that animates when the doors open. There are also no less than four clocks in the center (one actually functions as a visual display for the AI-powered voice control system) and an unexplained metal cylinder with a topographical pattern. Elsewhere, there are exquisite mother-of-pearl inlays on the dashboard and doors, along with a striking four-spoke steering wheel that looks like a classic car. This steering wheel, with its glass spindle bearing the Mercedes logo, is linked to the electric power steering system and rear-wheel steering to reduce the turning radius and eliminate the need to constantly turn the wheel. Although just a concept car, Mercedes says the Vision Iconic comes standard with an advanced level 2 semi-autonomous driving system in the city, with the ability to add a level 4 advanced autonomous driving mode on the highway.
Without having to actively drive, passengers can relax comfortably on the blue bench. After the journey ends, Vision Iconic can take care of parking thanks to the level 4 parking system, regardless of the infrastructure. Underpinning all of this is a “neuromorphic” computing system that is said to mimic the function of the human brain. This makes AI-based calculations faster and more efficient, resulting in quicker driver assistance responses, a tenfold improvement in performance, and a 90% reduction in energy consumption for autonomous driving functions.
Obviously, the Vision Iconic will never make it to production, but some of its design details could influence the next electric S-Class – the replacement for the much-maligned EQS – and its possible production coupé version.
