In 1803, King Gia Long issued an edict to establish Dien Khanh Temple of Literature in Phu Loc, Hoa Chau district, Binh Hoa town (now Dien Khanh commune, Khanh Hoa province) to worship Confucius and his outstanding students, as well as those who contributed to Confucianism. However, due to floods and landslides, Dien Khanh Temple of Literature was moved to another location. It was not until 1959 that it was restored to its current location. In the Dien Khanh Temple of Literature relic, there are still preserved a number of stone steles recording the history of the relic's formation, a list of famous scholars and dignitaries from the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty to the Tu Duc period.

During the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism, this place was used by revolutionary forces for various purposes to contribute to the victory of the resistance. In 1998, the Dien Khanh Temple of Literature was ranked as a national historical and cultural relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). Every year, at the Dien Khanh Temple of Literature, traditional ceremonies still take place on the holy days of Confucius's birthday and death anniversary. Along with that, there are scholarship activities to encourage and promote the studious spirit of students in the area.
