After 3 days of lung transplant, 21 year old female student stood up and learned to walk

After the transplant, on the third day, the patient was able to stand up and walk continuously for 4 minutes. On the fifth day, the patient's walking time increased to 15 minutes, which helped the lungs expand better.

On the afternoon of February 15, the Central Lung Hospital held a press conference to inform about the first successful lung transplant at the hospital on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024.

Attending the meeting, Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan stated that this is good news at the beginning of the year, a milestone for the organ and tissue transplant industry in Vietnam. On this occasion, the Minister of Health congratulated the female patient who received a lung transplant, and at the same time acknowledged and honored the noble act of the 26-year-old man who donated 8 organs to save the lives of many patients, including 2 lungs that helped a young girl with a serious lung disease to be revived thanks to a lung transplant.

Sharing about this lung transplant, Mr. Dinh Van Luong, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, said that this lung transplant was performed on February 10 (ie December 30, Quy Mao year). The lung transplant recipient was a female student (21 years old, from Bac Kan ) with pulmonary lymphangioma (LAM) or perforated lung disease, a rare disease.

“This disease creates air pockets in the lungs, spreads and causes loss of lung function. The patient’s condition is very serious, and he is likely to die within the next few months if he does not receive a lung transplant,” said Mr. Dinh Van Luong.

According to the leader of the Central Lung Hospital, this lung transplant was successful at the highest level according to the standards of the UCSF Lung Transplant Center, USA. After the transplant, on the 3rd day, the patient was able to stand up and walk for 4 minutes continuously, on the 5th day, the time the patient could walk continuously increased to 15 minutes, this helped the lungs expand better.

According to the Director of the Central Lung Hospital, the success of this lung transplant is recorded in the list of lung transplant systems in the world and contributes significantly to Vietnam's achievements in organ transplant techniques.
