Previously, on June 3, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1659/QD-BVHTTDL to include the folk knowledge of rattan and bamboo weaving techniques of the Thai people in Dien Bien province in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.
Bamboo and rattan weaving is a long-standing traditional craft, passed down from generation to generation by the Thai people and is still being promoted today. The products are very diverse with many product groups such as items used in religious activities, household items, and items used in production. Depending on each type of product, weavers use different weaving techniques such as single-layer bamboo baskets, double bamboo baskets, triple bamboo baskets...
Bamboo and rattan weaving requires skill, diligence, imagination, aesthetic sense and the accumulation of experience and secrets to create beautiful, durable hand-woven products that convey profound humanistic messages and the quintessence of national culture.
In Na Tau commune alone, based on the available raw materials in the locality, people have formed a weaving cooperative with 24 participating households. With more than decades of experience, the households produce products from bamboo and rattan to serve the local people and neighboring areas.
The inclusion of the Thai people's traditional knowledge of rattan and bamboo weaving techniques in the list of national heritages is not only an honor for the owners of the heritages but will also become an important premise and motivation for the authorities at all levels of Dien Bien province to continue their efforts to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of ethnic groups; arousing the awareness and responsibility of the community in discovering, preserving, conserving and promoting the value of local cultural heritages.
