The Prime Minister requested Military Region 5 to do a good job in mass mobilization, ethnic and religious affairs.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh noted that the area has a large number of ethnic minorities and religious people, requiring Military Region 5 to do a good job in mass mobilization, ethnic and religious affairs, contributing to consolidating a strong grassroots political system.

On the evening of October 16, the Military Region 5 Command held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Military Region's Armed Forces (LLVT) Traditional Day and received the Ho Chi Minh Medal - a noble award of the Party and State.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh , Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Quang Phuong, Minister of Ethnic Minorities and Religions Dao Ngoc Dung, along with leaders of central and local ministries and branches; revolutionary veterans, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, People's Armed Forces Heroes and a large number of officers and soldiers of Military Region 5 through the ages.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that right after the successful August Revolution, with profound strategic vision, the Party and President Ho Chi Minh decided to establish War Zone 5 (now Military Zone 5), marking a turning point in the process of building and developing the people's armed forces.

During the two resistance wars to save the country, Military Region 5 was the most important and fierce battlefield, directly confronting dangerous war strategies and tactics, and new types of operations of the enemy.

"The combat experiences of the Military Region 5's armed forces have been summarized into unique fighting methods, deepening Vietnam's military art," the Prime Minister emphasized.

After the country's reunification, the Military Region 5 quickly switched to new tasks: overcoming the consequences of war, suppressing reactionaries, fulfilling international obligations, participating in socio-economic development, preventing natural disasters, conducting search and rescue, and contributing to maintaining political stability and social order in the area.

Strategic location, especially important role

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Military Region 5 is a strategic area with five outstanding characteristics.

Firstly, it is the intersection of many strategic directions, not only of Vietnam but also of Laos and Cambodia; it has an important position in terms of economy, politics, national defense, and security, both on land, at the border and at sea.

Second, the area has an important meaning in performing the three functions of the army: the fighting army, the working army, and the production labor army.

Third, the area has a large number of ethnic minorities and religious people, requiring Military Region 5 to do a good job of mass mobilization, ethnic and religious work, contributing to consolidating a strong grassroots political system.

Fourth, Military Region 5 needs to continue promoting its role in infrastructure development, poverty reduction, new rural construction, and ensuring social security.

Fifth, the Military Region has a border of over 600km with Laos and Cambodia, of which more than 93km has not been demarcated or marked.

"We also hope that you will coordinate with relevant ministries and branches to quickly work with friendly countries to demarcate the remaining 93 km. The defense diplomacy work of Military Region 5 has practical significance, concretizing the foreign policy of our Party and State," the Prime Minister emphasized.

Six key tasks of Military Region 5 in the new period

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested the armed forces of Military Region 5 to perform well the 6 tasks in the coming time, with the spirit of all for the people, being closely attached to the people, and taking advantage of the people's strength to continue to excellently fulfill the role of a fighting army, a working army, and a production labor army.

First task, Military Region 5 must improve the work of grasping the situation and providing strategic advice, absolutely not being passive or surprised; flexibly and effectively handling situations right from the grassroots.

The next task is for the Military Region to promote its core role in building a national defense posture, people's security, ensuring political stability and social order and safety. Absolutely do not let hostile forces entice and incite the people.

Next, the units will improve their overall strength, training quality, drills, and combat readiness to meet the requirements of protecting the Fatherland in all situations, including high-tech warfare.

Fourth, build a clean, strong, exemplary, and representative Party organization of Military Region 5, improve the leadership capacity and fighting strength of the Party organization, cadres, and Party members.

Fifth, the Military Region must promote the role of the working army and the production labor army, improve the operational efficiency of defense economic groups and military enterprises; care for the lives of officers and soldiers, do a good job of gratitude, and collect martyrs' remains.

Finally, Military Region 5 must more effectively carry out defense diplomacy with Laos and Cambodia, contributing to maintaining peace, friendship, stability, and expanding the space for cooperation and development for the region and the whole country.

"We expect and believe that the armed forces of Military Region 5 will continue to promote their glorious tradition, strive to achieve many feats and achievements, and make even greater contributions to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. They will forever be worthy of the trust and love of the Party, State and people, and continue to write the glorious history of the heroic Vietnam People's Army and the heroic Vietnamese nation," the Prime Minister emphasized.
