Not only that, the lack of flexibility in attacking when the opponent defended in large numbers was another reason why Mr. Kim Sang-sik's team had a hard time winning in the match on the evening of October 9.
Clumsy when put in a difficult situation
It must be affirmed that the Vietnamese team has many conditions to easily beat Nepal. That is the home field advantage when the Go Dau field is familiar. That is the dry weather almost throughout the match so that Mr. Kim's team can easily deploy their small coordination skills.
In particular, Nepal is a weak opponent. Standing 62 places below the Vietnamese team on the FIFA rankings is proof. But the scenario on the field did not go as expected. Winning in a match that at times seemed like it would not be a victory is not a satisfactory development for fans as well as professionals.
It is also important to note that the Vietnamese team has another very good condition to easily pocket a victory. That is the very early goal, in the 7th minute by Tien Linh.
Taking the initiative to play a defensive game with a large number of players hoping to score points, conceding an early goal would have ruined Nepal's strategy and tactics, thereby making it easier for the Vietnamese team to attack. However, a mistake in the defensive system of Mr. Kim's team that allowed the opponent to score a goal affected the home team's mentality, making all their plans confusing.

Vietnam team won 3-1 against Nepal in the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers. |
The true measure of a team’s strength is when they meet opponents of equal quality and number of players on the field. The stalemate for 2/3 of the match showed that the Vietnamese team could not show the spirit and class of a highly rated opponent when Nepal played with all its players.
In fact, the solutions to neutralize the opponent's deep defense system from Mr. Kim's army are still not flexible, lack of variation and therefore are not effective, causing the home team to fall into a deadlock in the first 60 minutes. If the opponent plays with enough players, the Vietnamese team may face even greater difficulties and challenges in the last 30 minutes.
Scoring efficiency is too low
According to statistics, the Vietnamese team controlled the ball 75% of the time on the field. That is a terrible number, showing the pressure that Nepal had to endure.
Throughout the match, Mr. Kim Sang Sik's team had 24 shots on goal, 10 of which were on target. 24 shots but only 3 goals, accounting for only 12.5% of the chances created, is too small a number.
It is important to note that the intense pressure and most of the shots came in the second half, when Nepal had to play with one less player due to a red card at the end of the first half. Two of the three goals only came to Vietnam in a 11 vs 10 situation.
Coach Kim himself admitted after the match that the Vietnamese team had not completed the goal-scoring task well. "Despite many finishing situations, the Vietnamese team only scored 3 goals. To some extent, that is also a success. However, the Vietnamese players need to be more careful," Mr. Kim both consoled and blamed his students.
This is something Tien Linh and his teammates need to improve on. They must win, but fans need to see an easy, smooth and graceful victory, with a higher scoring efficiency, specifically in the ability to take advantage of opportunities, against Nepal in the second leg.
