Analysts say the A17 Pro chip and new telephoto camera represent the biggest price increase compared to its predecessor. Specifically, the A17 Pro chip costs $30 more than the A16 Bionic, mainly due to being manufactured on a 3nm process technology.
For the first-ever periscope telephoto camera for an iPhone, Lante Optics supplies the prism, while Cirrus Logic and LG Innotek build the 3D sensor-shift stabilization mechanism. The overall increase is $25.1 (34%), but Counterpoint Research included all cameras, including the Face ID and ToF modules, in its calculations.
Another small increase is the titanium frame, which is $7 more expensive than the stainless steel frame on its predecessor. Apple also increased the RAM on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, now with 8GB of RAM (up from 6GB on its predecessor), but due to the falling price trend in the memory market, the actual price has dropped by $16.80. The display on the new iPhone has not changed, while display prices have tended to fall, so Apple paid $4 less for Samsung Display and LG Display.
BoM components only account for 42% of the market price, but manufacturing, shipping, and marketing costs also need to be considered, not to mention the R&D costs that Apple has to spend.
