"We - the specialized doctors from leading hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City - came to Con Dao with the spirit of volunteering and enthusiasm of white-shirt soldiers, carrying in our hearts the trust and responsibility that the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Department of Health and the city's health sector have entrusted us with."

At the preliminary ceremony of the rotation program of specialist doctors to work at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, which took place on the afternoon of October 7, Dr. Huynh Giang Chau, the first rotation doctor of Hung Vuong Hospital, could not hold back his tears when recounting his one-month journey working in the farthest place in Ho Chi Minh City.

Unforgettable memories

During their time working, the first rotation of doctors examined and treated more than 2,600 patients, performing many complicated surgeries right on the island, from surgery for multiple trauma, emergency laparoscopic appendicitis, laparoscopic removal of ovarian tumors, uterine fibroids, tibial plateau fusion surgery, to safe delivery for high-risk pregnant women.

"In a short month, but truly, for us, it was a meaningful and emotional journey," Dr. Chau shared.

During the first days of arriving in Con Dao, the group of doctors encountered many difficulties: working conditions were lacking, equipment and testing facilities were limited, and the weather changed suddenly and erratically.

Dr. Chau was forever impressed by the first normal delivery performed on the island. The patient was a pregnant woman with high risk factors, with the possibility of postpartum hemorrhage. Previously, such cases had to be rushed to the mainland.

However, the Con Dao Military Medical Center has recently been equipped with a blood bank, so the pregnant woman's family can rest assured to stay in their hometown to give birth, instead of going to the mainland as before. The mother was then directly delivered by Dr. Chau, successfully giving birth to a 2.9kg baby. The baby was then directly cared for by Dr. Tran Thi Mai Lien, Children's Hospital 1.

For Dr. Mai Lien, after more than a month of working on the island, she had the opportunity to meet many people there. The female doctor shared the case of a 4-year-old girl who came to the clinic because of a cough, but after testing, she was found to be severely anemic, with a very low red blood cell count. Luckily, thanks to the newly built blood bank at the health center, the girl was given a red blood cell transfusion in time.

"Each successfully treated case is a joy, a new step forward for Con Dao healthcare - where people can access high-quality medical services without having to cross the sea to the mainland," Dr. Chau shared.

Not only stopping at medical examination and treatment, doctors also transfer techniques, train and guide on-site medical staff, helping the center become more proactive in emergency treatment, resuscitation and basic surgery.

For Dr. Chau, each surgery, each consultation, each page of his work diary all become memorable and proud memories of the doctor in white coat on a remote island.

"The most valuable thing we have received is not only the professional experience working in difficult and deprived conditions, but also the humanity, camaraderie and solidarity. We have learned to appreciate each case, each patient's smile and understand more deeply than ever the meaning of the word 'service'," said Dr. Chau.

Significant progress

Doctor Le Cong Tho, Director of the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, emphasized that the program of rotating specialist doctors to work has brought special significance to the work of caring for, protecting and improving the health of people in the Con Dao special zone.

After one month of implementing the program of rotating doctors to the island, the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center has recorded remarkable progress: the number of medical examinations increased by 67%, inpatient treatment increased by 75%, and bed capacity increased by 72%. Serious and complicated cases were promptly treated on the spot.

The number of outpatient visits increased from an average of 60 visits/day to 150, even reaching 200 visits/day.

Admission and inpatient treatment have increased sharply. Many complicated cases in specialties such as internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, etc. have been diagnosed and effectively treated right on the island, contributing to significantly reducing the need to transfer hospitals to the mainland, saving time, costs and improving treatment effectiveness for people.

In particular, the rotating doctors have coordinated with the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center to successfully deploy many new techniques, which were implemented for the first time in the locality. This is also an important premise for the Medical Center to continue to develop specialized techniques in the future.

In addition to medical examination and treatment, the rotating doctors also actively participate in consultations on difficult cases, transfer techniques, train and provide dedicated guidance to the on-site medical team. Thanks to that, the quality of medical examination and treatment services in Con Dao is increasingly improved, and people have access to higher quality medical services.

However, besides the positive results, Dr. Tho also pointed out some difficulties and limitations such as the lack of facilities and technical equipment at the Health Center; the medical human resources are still thin; maintaining and improving the quality of long-term medical examination and treatment still needs more attention and support from leaders at all levels and the city's health sector.

Speaking at the event, Associate Professor, Dr. Tang Chi Thuong, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, emphasized that the program of rotating specialist doctors to Con Dao initially achieved positive results thanks to the effective coordination between groups of doctors, many of whom are masters, doctors, and well-trained resident doctors.

A highlight is that doctors working on the island always receive professional support from leaders and experts from upper-level hospitals, helping to promptly handle complicated cases.

In addition, it is necessary to establish a mechanism for regular consultations to ensure professional quality, especially when there are not enough doctors in all specialties in each rotation.
