On October 21, Thai football was shaken when coach Masatada Ishii was suddenly terminated by the FAT. The dismissal of the Japanese strategist while the team was competing for a ticket to the 2027 Asian Cup was considered unreasonable by many people.
Amidst the controversy, FAT quickly announced a new captain. On the evening of October 22, on his personal Facebook page, FAT President Nualphan Lamsam (nickname Madame Pang) made an official announcement.
The new head coach of the Thai national team is Mr. Anthony Hudson, who has been the technical director of Thai football since June this year. Looking at the profile, the British strategist makes an impression. He has been the head coach of teams such as Bahrain, New Zealand and the interim coach of the US national team.
However, in reality, Mr. Anthony Hudson's contribution is not too significant. In the teams he has led, most of his winning percentages are below 50%.
Even in the New Zealand team from 2014 to 2017, his winning rate was only 33%. In which, the team he led could not even win against Asian teams such as Thailand, China, Myanmar.
Therefore, firing a talented strategist like Masatada Ishii with Anthony Hudson can be considered a big gamble for FAT.
Currently in Group D of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers, Thailand is in second place. They have the same 9 points as Turkmenistan but are behind on the extra index. To win a ticket to the highest tournament in Asia, Thailand must take the top spot. That is certainly not a small challenge for new coach Anthony Hudson.
