In his new autobiography, My Life Always at the Centre , the Armenian star candidly admits that his relationship with Mourinho at Manchester United fell apart after just over a season.

Arriving at Old Trafford in 2016 from Borussia Dortmund, Mkhitaryan was expected to become a creative piece in the "Red Devils" squad. He played 41 games in his first season, scoring 11 goals, but things quickly took a negative turn.

"From the moment I arrived, he (Mourinho) criticized me for a year and a half," Mkhitaryan wrote. "Then one day, I couldn't take it anymore and said: 'You say I'm bad, but you're the bad one.' Mourinho shouted: 'Go away, I don't want to see you anymore.'"

After that, the relationship between the two became awkward. He said: "During training sessions, he was silent, he didn't say a word to me. In the evening, I received a WhatsApp message saying: 'Miki, please leave.' I just replied automatically: 'I will leave if I find the right team.' In mid-January, he said: 'Miki, leave, I need Alexis Sanchez.'"

According to the revelation, Mino Raiola - Mkhitaryan's late agent, quickly seized the opportunity to negotiate a player exchange between Arsenal and MU. "I told Mourinho straight: 'I'm not going just to help you, if you want to talk to Mino'. And that's how it all ended. I went to Arsenal, and Alexis went to Old Trafford," Mkhitaryan recalled.

The sensational deal closed in January 2018, but both players failed to live up to expectations. Mkhitaryan played a decent role at Arsenal, while Sanchez suffered a steep decline at the Theatre of Dreams.

Interestingly, fate later reunited Mkhitaryan and Mourinho at AS Roma. This time, they put aside their feud to win the Europa Conference League together in the 2021/22 season. When leaving Roma to join Inter Milan, Mkhitaryan sent special thanks to Mourinho: "He believed in me and helped me get back to form. I will always cherish that time."
