Concert Vietnam: Quality creates momentum for development

In recent times, many major music events, from commercial concerts to “national concerts”, have attracted a large audience, especially young people. Along with that, the public’s admiration for the programs and artists has also changed in a positive direction.

Redefining “concert swing”

In the past days of August and September, a series of concerts (live art performances) spread the national spirit and patriotism such as Fatherland in the heart, Proud to be Vietnamese, Under the glorious flag, V Concert - Radiant Vietnam, V Fest - Glorious youth, Brother overcomes thousands of obstacles... opened up new expectations for the music industry and the audience's concert-going habits.

Previously, from 2024 until now, there have been Anh trai say hi, Em xinh say hi, Chi dep Dap gio ... "making waves". Along with that, the large and small concerts and personal live shows of the artists make us think and redefine the concept of "du concert" (following and paying attention to major art programs).

Remember, the 2 concerts in Hanoi in July 2023 of the Korean girl group BlackPink left many marks in the field of performance organization. The fact that tens of thousands of audiences from everywhere, not only domestically but also abroad flocked to watch the show has become the desire of domestic artists.

Just 2 years later, a series of domestic concerts, from political to commercial, have somewhat reached the scale of BlackPink's program at that time. Events continuously create a "fever" of ticket hunting and sold out tickets. Concerts have also gone beyond the concept of just coming to see a performance, becoming a place for audiences to experience emotions, where artists connect with the community and audiences in an aesthetic and meaningful space.

Domestic concerts are no longer copies of international concerts but have their own format (orientation), quality, and become the priority choice of young people.

Audience member Dang Thanh Hao (34 years old, living in Binh Thanh ward, Ho Chi Minh city), who participated in all 8 nights of the Anh trai vu ngan cong gai concert, shared the feeling of being immersed in the crowd listening and singing traditional songs: Vietnamese youth music has its own pride that no international concert can bring. He commented that domestic concerts are becoming more and more professional, from ticket sales, welcoming the audience to each performance being selected and staged with international standards...

Off-stage, the singers were also very excited to spend time at fanclub booths to interact. It was this closeness that created the attraction, creating harmonies between the artists and tens of thousands of fans, or even fanchant (a phrase chanting to cheer for the artist). "We young audiences do not hesitate to spend money on quality, classy music programs that honor traditional Vietnamese culture like this," said audience member Dang Thanh Hao.

Audience member Doan Huy Hieu (33 years old, residing in An Dong ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that "going to concerts" and "going to idols" were once considered bad concepts, but now they have more positive meanings. Concerts have become a place to redefine social relationships, creating fan communities that share a love for art, culture and spiritual values. Audience member Doan Huy Hieu shared: "The moments of singing in unison, even crying with artists in concerts are truly memorable experiences for youth."

New wave of changing tastes

Choosing concerts and artists to "follow" is also a new declaration of taste and the way to choose to experience cultural and entertainment enjoyment. Vietnamese Concerts are therefore not only the achievements of production units and artists but also a very clear sign that the taste of Vietnamese audiences is entering a new chapter, changing profoundly.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem, Deputy Head of the Department of Culture - Arts, Propaganda and Mass Mobilization of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, commented that there is a generation of audiences who are gradually maturing in terms of aesthetic taste and ability to perceive art and culture. The explosion of concerts in the past 1-2 years comes from the quality of production, the quality of artists, and the way the identity of the mass stage is redefined.

“Learning from developed entertainment industries helps improve the quality of the domestic performance industry, from music, organization methods, to machinery systems, and artist performance skills… In particular, instead of following international standards, there is a wave of “localization” in music that is taking place strongly and is being positively received by audiences. The most prominent point of this wave is the introduction of traditional materials into music. All of this shows the development of both technique and aesthetic thinking of the current generation of young artists,” Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diem analyzed.

It is not difficult to see that fanclub communities and Gen Z and Gen Y audiences are having a big impact on shaping art trends. They grew up with digital technology and are creating a new era of art, more connected and diverse.

With the shift in role from passive audience to active creator, in addition to enjoying the performances, you are ready to participate in creating artistic content from there. With smartphones and platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, Facebook Reels, Instagram..., young people actively film, edit, and publish their own products right at the concerts.

On social networks, fans of Vietnamese concerts make short summaries of each cultural performance, explaining the origins of the songs and melodies... Young audiences are not simply satisfied with catchy mixes or simply flashy stages, but know how to deeply understand the melodies, the sounds of the instruments, the drums, the beats...

The boom of domestic concerts shows that Vietnam's performance industry is gradually entering a stage of maturity, asserting its own identity, instead of just following the international model. And even domestic audiences, especially the youth, are also undergoing a strong transformation, not only "going to concerts" for entertainment but also seeking cultural experiences, national pride and community connection.

This reality requires continuing to professionalize the organization, improve the quality of artists, and at the same time strongly exploit the localization factor, so that the Vietnamese music industry can become a sustainable creative economic sector in the future.
