This is not only an opportunity for people to pay tribute to the Great General of the South Sea - the Water General - the god who protects and blesses fishermen to overcome storms, but also an opportunity to promote the image, potential and cultural values of Can Gio land to tourists near and far.
He said that Can Gio commune was established on the basis of merging two administrative units of Can Thanh town and Long Hoa commune, with an area of over 15,700 hectares and a population of over 27,000 people. As a coastal area holding an important strategic position in terms of marine economy , environment and national defense and security, Can Gio is gradually developing strongly in the direction of becoming an eco-tourism center, a green and sustainable coastal urban area of the city.
In the general economic picture, fisheries are still the key industry. In the first 9 months of 2025, the total value of fisheries in the commune achieved high results. Currently, the whole commune has more than 200 fishing vessels going offshore; although the fishing grounds are mainly coastal, fishermen always strive to innovate fishing gear, upgrade their equipment, apply technology in seafood exploitation and strictly comply with regulations against illegal fishing (IUU). Along with that, the aquaculture industry continues to develop steadily, many typical products such as shrimp, squid, clams, oysters, dried fish... have gained a foothold in the market.

On this occasion, the People's Committee of Can Gio commune commended and rewarded collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in production, aquaculture and fishing; and at the same time recognized individuals and units with contributions to the conservation and restoration of Ong Thuy Tuong Tomb.
After the ceremony, the audience and visitors enjoyed a special art program staged by the Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City, recreating the traditional festival atmosphere mixed with modern colors, joining a series of exciting activities during this year's Whale Festival.

Building Can Gio into a unique green destination
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Dung said that the Can Gio Whale Festival is a festival with a long history, closely associated with the spiritual life of fishermen. Each festival season is an opportunity for people to express their gratitude to the sea, remember their ancestors and heroic martyrs, pray for favorable weather, safe sailing, and a full catch of fish and shrimp.
Comrade Nguyen Van Dung emphasized that the Can Gio Whale Festival was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, becoming the pride of the people of the city named after Uncle Ho, and at the same time a cultural and tourist destination for domestic and international friends.
According to him, the festival is not only a festival for fishermen, but also an opportunity for Ho Chi Minh City to introduce to friends near and far a unique land, where the mangrove ecosystem is considered the "green lung of the city", along with the unique cultural and religious values at Lang Ong Thuy Tuong or the sincere and affectionate people of Can Gio.
Through the festival, the city calls on the community to join hands in preserving heritage, developing green tourism, creating unique products and services, improving people's livelihoods, and contributing to building Can Gio into a safe, friendly and unique destination on the tourist map.
