Previously, the Provincial Police received Official Dispatch No. 276 dated May 25 of Tien Phong newspaper and Official Dispatch No. 4486 dated June 30 of Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee regarding the verification and handling of the act of threatening the life of journalist Nguyen Van Tuan. After that, the Provincial Police directed the Investigation Police Agency (IPA) of Cu Kuin District Police to receive and assign officers to handle the report.
As a result, the Cu Kuin District Police determined that at around 8:15 p.m. on May 18, at the home of Mr. Pham Sy Mao (village 11, Ea Ktur commune, Cu Kuin district), Mr. Nguyen Cong Huong borrowed Mr. Mao's phone to call the journalist's phone number and made threatening, insulting, and abusive words to Mr. Tuan and his family. Immediately after that, Mr. Mao continued to call and made threatening, insulting, and abusive words to Mr. Tuan.
Colonel Nguyen Van Quy, Chief of Staff and spokesman of Dak Lak Provincial Police, informed about the case of journalist Nguyen Van Tuan being threatened to be killed.
According to the investigation agency, Mr. Huong confessed that he did this because he suspected Mr. Tuan of setting him up to commit a violation. In addition, Mr. Huong also knew that journalist Nguyen Van Tuan had reported his land violations to the authorities.
During the working process at the Cu Kuin District Police Investigation Agency, Mr. Nguyen Cong Huong and Mr. Pham Sy Mao admitted their actions, consistent with the whistleblower's testimony and other documents and evidence in the file. Currently, the Investigation Agency is continuing to collect related documents and evidence to consolidate the file, proposing to handle Mr. Huong and Mr. Mao in accordance with the law.
Previously, in late April and early May 2023, journalist Nguyen Van Tuan received a report about illegal trading of agricultural land in Ea Ktur commune, Cu Kuin district to level the ground for construction of a number of traffic routes in Dak Lak province.
After fully recording, journalist Nguyen Van Tuan contacted the leaders of the People's Committee of this commune to work, but they always avoided and did not provide information.
On May 18, the journalist went to work with Mr. Nguyen Kim May - Chairman of the People's Committee of Ea Ktur commune, then asked for the phone number of Mr. Dinh - head of village 8, where the earth digging incident took place, to contact and verify. That same evening, two men using the same phone number 0915840755 took turns calling journalist Nguyen Van Tuan's phone number.
