Cunha was confused when given the responsibility of scoring goals at MU. |
Matheus Cunha, who joined Manchester United in the summer of 2025 for a fee of £62.5 million, has yet to score in six Premier League appearances. However, the Brazilian striker insists he is not pessimistic, saying that adapting to a new role is necessary for maturity.
Sharing with Globo , Cunha admitted that he is not a classic “number 9”: “My whole career, I was a midfielder. But when I became a professional player, I encountered a 4-3-3 formation. You have to adapt – play as a center forward, a winger or a number 8. The traditional midfield position has almost disappeared, and I see that as a positive thing because it helps me to be more flexible, to learn many different roles.”
Although he has yet to score, the 26-year-old player said he understands the pressure and is ready to accept it: "I have to take on the responsibility of scoring goals, and if that helps me become a champion, I think it is worth accepting."
Cunha says he is settling into his new surroundings and is staying positive amid high expectations at Old Trafford: “What I am looking for in myself, I am slowly achieving. You always want to improve, but you also have to enjoy the moment. My family is healthy, I have a daughter - and I am enjoying everything in the best way.”
Manchester United are currently 10th in the Premier League and will face Liverpool after the FIFA Days in October. Cunha hopes the big clash at Anfield will be the moment he finds inspiration to truly start his journey with the "Red Devils".
