By 2035, the crop sector strives to reduce at least 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions.

The project "Production of emission reduction in the crop sector for the period 2025-2035, vision to 2050" has just been approved by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

The project aims to transform the crop production sector towards low emissions, climate change adaptation and sustainable development.

Accordingly, the Project sets a specific target that by 2035, the crop cultivation sector will contribute to reducing at least 15% of total greenhouse gas emissions compared to the baseline year 2020; and will build and develop the "Low Emission" label for crop products.

Along with that, each province will deploy at least 1-2 emission reduction production models that can be replicated; pilot at least 15 farming models that can develop carbon credits that meet the requirements of international organizations;

Issue at least five technical packages for emission reduction production for key crops; establish a database for emission reduction in crop cultivation that is synchronously connected with the National Registration System; train at least 3,000 technical staff, agricultural extension officers, farmers and businesses nationwide; develop five sets of communication documents, disseminate knowledge, and promote the change of farmers' production behavior towards emission reduction.

By 2050, Vietnam's crop production industry will develop in an ecological, modern, low-emission direction, becoming a pillar in the green transformation of the country's agriculture . Strive for 100% of the main crop area to apply sustainable farming techniques... Thereby, making Vietnam a pioneer in the region in developing climate-responsible agricultural products, contributing to the goal of net zero emissions as committed at COP26.

To realize the goals, the Project focuses on 6 groups of tasks and 7 main groups of solutions to be deployed nationwide in the period 2025 - 2035, focusing on key crops with high potential for emission reduction such as rice, cassava, sugarcane, coffee, bananas, etc.

The main tasks include: Flexible conversion of crop structure, suitable to the ecological characteristics and cultivation level of the region; development and application of technical packages in crop production to reduce emissions; deployment of regional and value chain models; establishment and operation of a measurement - reporting - verification (MRV) system and a national database on greenhouse gas emissions; capacity building and awareness transformation; market connection for low-emission products.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has also assigned the implementation to the units under the Ministry, the People's Committees of provinces and cities, and related organizations and enterprises. The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection is assigned to preside over, coordinate and guide the implementation of the Project nationwide.
