Previously, on September 26, while doing activities at home, Mr. T unfortunately fell so his family took him to the emergency room.
X-ray results showed that the patient had a complex fracture of the right femur. Due to old age, osteoporosis and many small fractures, doctors determined that it was impossible to immobilize with a cast. At the same time, Mr. T also had a mild body infection, which, if left immobile for a long time, could lead to many serious complications such as pneumonia, pressure ulcers or impaired motor function.
After interdisciplinary consultation, the doctors agreed to choose total hip replacement surgery to help the patient regain mobility soon, reduce pain and avoid complications due to prolonged lying down.
Dr. Hoang Van Manh, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, who directly participated in the surgery, said: “The surgery was performed under spinal anesthesia, lasting about 45 minutes. The team made every effort to preserve the muscles and joint capsule as much as possible, helping the patient reduce post-operative pain and be able to exercise early.”

After surgery, Mr. T's health improved well, without any complications. After just a few days, the patient was able to sit up and practice walking with the aid of a physical therapist. Mr. T is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
According to Dr. Manh, for the elderly, especially those over 100 years old, hip replacement surgery is a big challenge due to weak physical condition, osteoporosis and many underlying diseases. However, if carefully evaluated and prepared, surgery can still be performed safely, bringing high efficiency, helping patients reduce pain and improve quality of life.
Dr. Manh also recommends that the elderly need to be especially careful when moving around and doing activities at home, and should have relatives to support them to avoid the risk of falling. Light exercise, eating enough calcium and vitamin D and regular health check-ups also help strengthen bones and joints, preventing osteoporosis and fractures.
