Tech giant Meta has expanded its AI-powered automatic translation feature to short videos (Reels) on Facebook and Instagram, marking a major step forward in its efforts to bridge language barriers on global social media platforms.
According to the company's announcement, the Meta AI tool now supports four languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese. This is the first expansion since Meta began testing AI translation last year, after rolling out bilateral support between English and Spanish this past August.
Meta says Facebook and Instagram creators can use Meta AI to translate and dub Reels videos into other languages — for free for public Instagram accounts and Facebook account holders with over 1,000 followers in countries where Meta AI has been rolled out.
One of the highlights is that AI technology can simulate the voice and intonation of the content creator, making the translation more natural and authentic than using another voice.
Each translated video is clearly labeled to let viewers know they're watching content that's been automatically translated by AI.
Users can easily adjust translation settings by tapping the three-dot icon in the bottom right corner of the video. There, they can turn translation on/off; change the display language; or select the language they don't want translated.
Mr. Adam Mosseri - Director of Instagram - commented that Reels is one of the most powerful user engagement tools in recent years, and affirmed that Meta will continue to invest in developing related features to increase engagement and global reach.
Meta also revealed plans to expand support for more languages in the near future, with the goal of turning Reels into a “cross-language bridge” between billions of users worldwide./ .
