On the morning of October 11, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health announced that the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center has officially begun performing scheduled surgeries.
According to this unit, these are planned, non-emergency surgeries, carefully prepared and performed according to a predetermined schedule, to ensure safety, efficiency and optimization of medical resources on the island.
In the first batch, doctors rotating from Binh Dan Hospital (HCMC) to work in Con Dao successfully performed two laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgeries for two women.
These are the first endoscopic surgeries performed at the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center, marking a new step forward in expanding high-quality surgical treatment services to people on remote islands.

The first elective surgeries
The first case was Mrs. LTK (53 years old) who was hospitalized with severe colic pain in the right hypochondrium, the pain appeared after meals. Ultrasound and paraclinical results recorded gallstones in the gallbladder with the largest size of about 15mm.
Because the patient had a history of open surgery for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy in 2000, the doctors predicted the possibility of adhesions in the abdominal cavity, which could cause difficulties during the surgery. After an online consultation with experts from Binh Dan Hospital, the team agreed to prescribe laparoscopic cholecystectomy for Ms. K.
The surgical team includes Dr. Vu Khuong An (Deputy Head of the Department of Line Command and Scientific Research, Binh Dan Hospital) as the main surgeon; Dr. Nguyen Huu Tai (Hung Vuong Hospital), Dr. Le Uy Phuong (Trauma and Orthopedics Hospital) and Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Truc (Deputy Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation 1, Binh Dan Hospital).
After more than an hour of surgery, the doctors had separated and clearly exposed the structure of the hepatobiliary triangle, and safely removed the gallbladder. The patient had a good prognosis and was recovering steadily.
The second case is Mrs. VTBN (51 years old) with symptoms of colic and dull pain in the right hypochondrium that lasted for many years, especially after meals. The examination results at the Military and Civilian Medical Center of Con Dao Special Zone discovered a cluster of gallstones measuring about 22mm. The patient expressed her wish to have laparoscopic surgery right at the locality.
Difficulties arose when Ms. N. suffered from temporomandibular joint inflammation, which limited her ability to open her mouth, possibly hindering anesthesia. Realizing this, Dr. Thanh Truc held an online consultation with experts from Binh Dan Hospital. A set of difficult endotracheal intubation tools was sent to Con Dao to support the surgery.
In addition, the doctors also coordinated consultations with Dr. Nguyen Hoang Viet Hung (Central Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology, Ho Chi Minh City) who is rotating on the island, helping the anesthesia and surgery process go smoothly.
Both patients had a smooth postoperative period, stable health, and were expected to be discharged after two days and scheduled for regular check-ups to monitor recovery progress.
New step forward in Con Dao healthcare
The representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health emphasized that the two scheduled surgeries are a new step forward for Con Dao's medical system, not only being ready to perform emergency surgery for critical cases but also proactively scheduling weekly surgeries for other diseases requiring surgical intervention, including complicated diseases.
This is no different from the operations of a specialist hospital today.
In the near future, doctors from Binh Dan Hospital will support the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center to standardize anesthesia procedures and fully prepare for situations that may occur during surgical procedures in difficult cases.
From there, gradually improve the quality of anesthesia and resuscitation for local medical centers with similar quality standards that are being implemented right at Binh Dan Hospital.
The Department of Health acknowledged and highly appreciated the efforts of group 2 doctors who are rotating to work in Con Dao, who successfully performed laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients living there.
In particular, the Department of Health highly appreciated the remote professional guidance of the leaders and surgical and anesthesia experts of Binh Dan Hospital in helping to standardize surgical and anesthesia procedures for the Con Dao Military-Civilian Medical Center.
