Coach Harry Kewell: “I enjoy the challenge of leading Hanoi Club”

"When I had the opportunity to lead Hanoi FC and saw the ambition of the club, a team with a strong desire to win based on its identity, I was very excited and ready to enjoy this challenge. I also know that Hanoi FC is in the period of celebrating its 20th anniversary, this brings great pressure to lead the team to success.

However, for me, football is about pressure, and football is about learning and trying to improve every day. I had prepared before taking over the team. After studying and reviewing the team's matches, I realized some things that needed to be improved," coach Harry Kewell said at a press conference on the afternoon of October 9.

"As a coach, it is essential to provide clear information so that the players understand what the coach wants, and at the same time expect them to work hard. I also decide how the team will play based on the players I have as well as the training process. Every team wants to play like Liverpool or Man City, but it takes time to achieve that," Harry Kewell affirmed.

The new captain of the Capital team said he is the type of coach who adapts to the situation, is ready for any challenge and tries to find the best football, creating the best results. He pledged to work hard with the players and try his best to help the club reach success.

Harry Kewell is a familiar face in the Premier League, symbolizing a generation of talented and disciplined players in Australian football. He once reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with Leeds United in 2000-2001. With Liverpool, the Australian football legend also won the Champions League in 2004-2005.

After retiring, Harry Kewell embarked on a coaching career in England - a place that requires strict expertise, processes and football management thinking. He has held roles at Crawley Town, Oldham Athletic, Barnet and Watford, and is highly regarded for his ability to inspire, develop young players and build a team culture based on professionalism.

Harry Kewell was also an assistant to coach Ange Postecoglou at Celtic (Scotland) in 2022, before taking over as coach of Yokohama Marinos in early 2024 and helping the Japanese team win the runner-up position in the 2023-2024 AFC Champions League.

Now, when arriving in Hanoi, Harry Kewell brings with him not only his reputation, but also his experience from the harsh Premier League environment, along with a coaching philosophy forged at European and Japanese clubs, which Vietnamese football is aiming for.

In that context, the appointment of coach Harry Kewell, an Australian football legend who has fought in the Premier League as well as the World Cup, is a step that shows the great desire and determination to change of the capital team.

Hanoi Club's belief in Harry Kewell

The fact that a world football icon like Harry Kewell came to work in Vietnam is not just a coaching contract, but a strategic event, reflecting the aspiration to rise and integrate more deeply of Hanoi Football Club in particular and Vietnamese football in general with the region and continent.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Do Vinh Quang affirmed that it was not easy for Hanoi FC to convince a famous coach to work in Vietnam. However, the great thing is that Coach Kewell was very interested in the proposal of the Capital team, which promoted the next negotiation process.

“As a high-class and famous coach, of course it took us a long time to reach a final agreement. But it was worth it, because the presence of a famous player like Kewell will help the players become better, when they can learn from a legendary player right on the field instead of through video clips," said Mr. Do Vinh Quang.

The Chairman of Hanoi Football Club added: “Hanoi Football Club is entering a new phase - a phase of modern thinking, discipline and professionalism. The appointment of Mr. Harry Kewell is part of a long-term strategy for the Club to transform itself to international standards.

At Hanoi FC, there is only one star, that is the team. No individual is bigger than the club, no one is above the spirit of solidarity and humility. That spirit is the brightest star of Hanoi FC. I believe that Mr. Harry Kewell - with his European mindset and his heart towards collective values - will sympathize and continue this tradition."
