On October 16, within the framework of the Industrial Transformation Asia -Pacific Expo (ITAP 2025) at Singapore Expo, the Vietnam Trade Office in Singapore coordinated with the Vietnam Electronics Industry Association (VEIA) and the Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) to co-organize a trade connection program for businesses of the two countries, focusing on the fields of electricity, electronics, electrical equipment, semiconductors and industrial manufacturing.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Cao Xuan Thang, Vietnam Trade Counselor in Singapore, said that Singapore is a comprehensive strategic cooperation partner of Vietnam. In recent years, Singapore has always been the largest FDI investor in Vietnam and the second largest foreign investor up to now.

Of the total FDI capital, investment in the manufacturing and processing industry accounts for the largest proportion. In addition, the two-way import-export turnover between Vietnam and Singapore has always grown strongly in recent times, in which the group of electrical and electronic components and equipment is the main commodity group, with an impressive annual growth rate.

Mr. Cao Xuan Thang emphasized that the Vietnamese Government has many policies and programs to promote the development of electronics, semiconductors, supporting industries, and key industries. This is a legal corridor for businesses to increase investment in developing these industries in Vietnam.

Sharing at the meeting, Ms. Do Thi Thuy Huong - Member of the Executive Committee of VEIA - focused on the current status, prospects and regional cooperation of the Vietnamese semiconductor industry, emphasizing current challenges such as lack of quality human resources, weak infrastructure and dependence on foreign investment.

However, Ms. Huong also said that Vietnam has a strategy to become a global supply chain center by 2030-2050, with solutions to be implemented such as investing in STEM education , building infrastructure, attracting investment, and exploiting domestic resources.

In addition, Vietnam also cooperates with Singapore, a country strong in design and casting, taking advantage of Vietnam's low labor costs and resources, combined with Singapore's experience, aiming at technology transfer, value chain division and joint infrastructure investment.

At the program, Mr. Ang Wee Seng - CEO of SSIA, representative of Singaporean partner - updated information on the potential for cooperation in the semiconductor industry in Southeast Asian countries, emphasizing the growing importance of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in global semiconductor production in the context of geopolitical instability.

According to Mr. Ang Wee Seng, ASEAN currently contributes 25% of global IC (integrated circuit) exports, with strong assembly, testing and packaging (ATP) facilities in Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Major investors such as Intel, Micron and Amkor have positioned ASEAN as a “third pole” alongside the US and China.

Singapore leads in wafer manufacturing, advanced packaging and semiconductor equipment (accounting for 20% of the global market share), while Vietnam complements it through cost-effective manufacturing and electronics expansion, he said.

The Singapore Semiconductor Landscape Study report identified 13 emerging opportunities, particularly in the areas of smart manufacturing and AI integration, highlighting the collaboration between Singapore’s innovation and Vietnam’s scalable manufacturing to create a sustainable and connected ASEAN semiconductor ecosystem.

Sharing with VNA reporters in Singapore, Mr. Ang Wee Seng said: “The most important thing we are implementing is to raise awareness about Vietnam's semiconductor industry for our companies here. To make a commercial decision, it is necessary to understand the businesses. So what VEIA is trying to do is really great: that is to help Singapore companies understand the context and development goals of Vietnam."

“We are also sharing the same with Vietnamese companies in Singapore. We need more platforms like this to help businesses from both sides learn and cooperate. Over time, business partnerships will be fostered.”

The trade connection program has attracted many Vietnamese and Singaporean businesses to participate to take advantage of the opportunity to connect with many partners.

This opportunity is not only about the potential for trade in goods, but also helps businesses of the two countries share common views on attracting investment in many fields - including electronics and semiconductor manufacturing - to Vietnam in the coming time./.
