Two weeks before Christmas, many shops on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City) are now filled with Christmas trees and decorative accessories with many eye-catching designs, attracting customers.

Selling Christmas decorations since early November, but Ms. Tin's shop (60 years old, a kiosk vendor on Hai Thuong Lan Ong street) still has a lot of inventory.

On weekends, the number of customers flocking to the street specializing in selling decorative items on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street (District 5) is getting more and more crowded (Photo: Binh Minh).

"In previous years, I sold continuously from morning to night, coffee shops and restaurants "racing" to place orders, sometimes not even having enough stock to sell. Now, there are only 2 weeks left until Christmas but the warehouse still has a lot of stock, even though we have adjusted and imported less goods than last year," the female trader said in frustration.

Having been in the business of selling holiday decorations for more than 20 years, this is the first time Ms. Tin has seen such a "low" number of customers buying Christmas decorations.

"Compared to last year, purchasing power has decreased a lot, only about 40%," Ms. Tin shared.

Similarly, Ms. Tram (30 years old, a merchant on Hai Thuong Lan Ong street) said that although the number of customers coming and going is bustling, purchasing power is not as high as last year, because people are tending to limit spending.

"I started displaying Christmas decorations in early November, but sales were slow. In early December, purchasing power increased, but was still low compared to previous years. With the economic difficulties, people were also frugal when buying decorations, so many families reused old items from previous years," Ms. Tram explained.

Balls, bows, flashing lights... are popular items because of their low prices (Photo: Binh Minh).

Thinh Hung, an employee at a decoration store in District 5, said it was the peak shopping season for Christmas. Customers were mainly individual customers, buying items to decorate their offices, classrooms or homes. However, business was not any better than last month.

Entering the store, Ms. Quynh Tien (25 years old, living in District 6) asked the sales staff about decorative bows. Ms. Tien said: "This year I have limited the purchase of ready-made decorations, because I want to make them myself to save a little money. Now, I am just looking for a few small, sparkling bows to highlight the laurel wreath I just finished making at home."

According to observations, most customers choose to buy small decorations such as balls, priced from 20,000 to 300,000 VND/box/10 balls depending on size. Other hanging items such as ribbons, bows, tinsel, stars cost from 10,000 to 120,000 VND/product. Laurel wreaths cost from 80,000 to 120,000 VND/piece;...

The velvet Christmas tree is a "trendy" item this Christmas (Photo: Binh Minh).

For pine trees, the shops on Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street offer trees of all sizes, materials, and prices. The best-selling type is the PE pine trees, which are 30cm to 1.2m high, ranging from a few hundred thousand to about two or three million VND.

However, with the recent trend of handmade pine trees made of velvet, PE plastic pine trees are selling slowly.

On the contrary, craft material stores, antler wire and small decorative accessories are very popular, "sold out". Many young people tend to make their own Christmas trees because this type of product is made of antler wire, easy to make, durable, beautiful and is a suitable gift for relatives and friends.
