Under the guidance of coach Patrick Kluivert, “Garuda” lost 2-3 to Saudi Arabia and continued to fall 0-1 to Iraq. This result left Indonesia at the bottom of Group B with only 2 losses, meaning there is no chance of advancing.
Disappointment has engulfed Indonesian football and even the Dutch media have voiced their criticism. Veteran commentator Valentijn Driessen of De Telegraaf said Indonesia “failed completely” despite the large presence of Dutch personnel in the coaching staff.
“A poor result against a weaker opponent. The day of reckoning will surely come, and the Dutch coaching staff in Jakarta will likely be sacked for not being suitable,” Driessen wrote.

Alongside Kluivert, the support team includes assistant Alex Pastoor, Denny Landzaat, advisor Jordi Cruyff and team development specialist Regi Blinker, all of whom are from the Netherlands. With this contribution, the expectation was placed on Indonesia to go far, even qualify for the World Cup finals. However, two consecutive defeats extinguished that hope.
Mr. Driessen even said that Indonesia's opponents in this qualifying round were not too strong, but the performance of Kluivert and his team was lackluster. This achievement could cost Kluivert his head coach position.
“Despite having a team of Dutch players and a coaching staff with extensive European experience, Indonesia was still eliminated by Iraq. This is clear evidence of failure,” Driessen commented.
This failure not only ended the 2026 World Cup dream, but also raised big questions about the long-term development direction of Indonesian football under the leadership of experts from the Netherlands.
