Hanoi today is a place where the nation's long-standing historical and cultural values converge and crystallize. The beauty of the city is the intersection between the ancient and the modern, between traditional cultural identity and a dynamic pace of life. Continuing the heroic tradition, Hanoians today join hands to preserve and promote good values, contributing to writing and embellishing the golden history of the "Heroic Capital", "City for Peace ".

Scene recreating the atmosphere of Hanoi on liberation day.

On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 / October 10, 2025), historical witnesses shared memories of the Capital filled with flags and flowers on the day of victory.

Mr. Do Quang Trung (born in 1934), former official of the Hanoi City Government Organization Committee: The song "Marching to Hanoi" resonates forever in my heart.

When Hanoi was liberated, I was a student attending the class taking over the capital. When I returned to Hanoi on the day of liberation, I witnessed people pouring into the streets from the suburbs of Hanoi to Hoan Kiem Lake to celebrate the victory. At that time, I also joined the crowd singing the song “Marching to Hanoi”.

Mr. Do Quang Trung.

At that time, many people brought accordions and violins to the streets to play and sing amidst the flag-filled scenery. The joyful atmosphere of victory filled the streets of the capital.

Witnessing Hanoi's resilience during the war years and its current development, I feel very proud. The sacrifices of the previous generation so that the current generation can build and protect independence and freedom demonstrate the indomitable will of the people of Hanoi, both in wartime and peacetime, always ready to "die for the Fatherland to live".

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tan: "The beautiful memories of the Capital Liberation Day are always imprinted in my mind"

71 years have passed, but the beautiful memories of the Capital Liberation Day (October 10, 1954) are still vivid in my mind. Every year, when this day comes, my tears well up, my mind recalls the scene of the moment when the entire Capital burst into joy of victory and remembers the image of my sacrificed brother, martyr Nguyen Sy Van.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tan.

When Hanoi was liberated, I was only 18 years old. At that time, on the streets, many students, women, and mothers made flags and flowers and brought them to the streets to give to people to wave to welcome the army marching to Hanoi. Along O Cho Dua, Bach Mai streets, and many other streets, people were bustling with joy and excitement to welcome the victory.

My house is on Hang Bai street, so I stood in front of the house and witnessed the heroic army marching in; there were extremely touching scenes when mothers met their husbands and children on the happy day of victory; and then the tight handshakes of comradeship, brotherhood, and the warm military-civilian relationship left a deep impression throughout my life.

Mr. Do Dang Long, Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the Representative Board of Revolutionary Soldiers Captured and Imprisoned by the Enemy in Hanoi: "I am very proud to witness Hanoi's growing development."

This year I am 97 years old, although my health is not as good as before, but witnessing Hanoi's development, I feel very happy. Remembering the moment the capital was newly liberated, the image of the army advancing through the 5 gates amid the cheers of the people, flags and flowers fluttering all over the streets, I am extremely proud.

Mr. Do Dang Long.

During the war years, Hanoi was covered in smoke and fire. Soldiers and patriotic people, including many young people and students, stood up to fight with all their will and steadfast belief. Many were captured by the enemy and imprisoned in Hoa Lo Prison and other prisons in the city. Amidst shackles and chains, the soldiers continued to hone their revolutionary spirit, organized struggles against the harsh prison regime and successfully organized prison breaks.

The scene in Hanoi on the morning of October 10, 1954 was extremely bustling and jubilant. Looking at the radiant faces of the people welcoming the victorious army back, we could feel the value of peace, independence and freedom that our army and people sacrificed to preserve and protect.
