Russia surrounds a Ukrainian battalion, breaks through south of Siversk

Russian troops have surrounded a Ukrainian battalion near Seversk and are focusing on breaking through to the south, now just 2 km from the city.

A combat battalion of the Ukrainian army (AFU) has been surrounded in the area south of the city of Seversk, the Russian Military Review reported. The Ukrainian troops are awaiting orders to withdraw, while the Russian army (RFAF) continues to tighten the siege around the AFU's defensive positions.

“A fortified AFU area south of Seversk, between Kuzminovka and Vyemka, is still held by Ukrainian forces, despite the threat of being completely surrounded. The Ukrainian forces are now surrounded on three sides, with the only escape route being towards Seversk, but even that is completely controlled by RFAF fire,” Military Review reported.

The RFAF's successes in the Kuzminivka area, as well as the capture of advantageous positions west of Vyemka, led to the active encirclement of a battalion-sized tactical group of the AFU, which was still defending a fortified area, positioned between the heights, in the aforementioned settlements.

“Currently, the mouth of the “cauldron” is still about 3 km wide, but the Ukrainian army is almost unable to break the encirclement in an organized manner, due to the strong firepower of the Russian army; while the Ukrainian army here has not yet received orders to retreat,” Russian military expert Andrei Marochko reported.

The Russians now had a three-sided encirclement of Siversk, but the main RFAF advance on the city, concentrated from the south, continued. After capturing Kuzminovka, the assault units of the RFAF Western Group advanced on Zvanivka, starting fighting on three streets on the southern outskirts of the village.

The village of Zvanivka is located on the southern flank of Seversk, and is the last village before advancing on the city. If the RFAF can capture this village, it will further narrow the encirclement, making it almost impossible for the AFU in Siversk to escape. The Russians have also cut off the supply lines to the fortified area.

“Russian troops continue to break through the defense lines of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, advancing towards Seversk from the south. Fierce fighting is underway in the village of Zvanivka, the last settlement before entering the city,” the RVvoenkory channel said.

Earlier reports of RFAF assault units entering Zvanivka village have been confirmed. Small Russian mobile groups have been spotted south of the village. According to Mr. Marochko, Russian troops are present on three streets of Zvanivka: Sosyury, Shevchenko and Molodezhnaya, where heavy fighting is taking place.

Mr. Marochko added that not only was the attack on the village of Zvanivka, but the RFAF was advancing on a wide front from the south towards Seversk, and they entered Zvanovka by advancing along the railway line.

The appearance of Russian assault units in the village of Zvanivka has caused "panic" among some Ukrainian soldiers. Of course, it is too early to say that the Ukrainian army is ready to withdraw from this village, which is crucial for the fate of the city of Siversk.

Information about the presence of Russian troops on the outskirts of the village of Zvanivka was reported on October 3. Zvanivka is just over 2 kilometers from Seversk. Currently, Russian troops are besieging the city from three directions. The situation in Siversk is extremely difficult for the AFU, as the Ukrainian servicemen themselves admit.

Readovka reported that the RFAF is breaking into Seversk from all possible directions, and soon Siversk will be in the familiar grip of the enemy. The direction of the breakthrough into Siversk is noteworthy, because the RFAF has been struggling to advance here since the start of the special military operation.

Strongholds such as Avdiivka, Bakhmut and Vuhledar have long since fallen, but Seversk has not yet yielded. Over the past several months, the RFAF has been steadily advancing towards Seversk, successfully capturing the villages of Belogorovka and Serebryanka. Recently, the AFU has been driven out of Kuzmynivka and Fyodorovka. As a result, the Russian encirclement is gradually tightening from both the north and the south.

The RFAF is also advancing into Siversk from Verkhnokamyanske, located to the east, and along the railway line leading out of Seversk to the southeast. Thus, the Russians are attacking Seversk from three directions at once, and the fourth direction is also advancing towards the village of Yampil, a position to the northwest.

"The city of Seversk is in a state of near-encirclement. The situation of the Ukrainian defense forces in the area has deteriorated significantly, as both Russian artillery and FPV UAVs are controlling all roads," Archangel Spetsnaz channel commented.

The main difficulty for the RFAF in advancing on Seversk was the terrain. Several villages with lakes, railways and ravines were said to be located close to each other. All this allowed the AFU to lay out fortified trenches.
