The art of Tuong through costumes and typical characters

(Dan Tri) - Tuong is a traditional theatrical form of Vietnam. When it developed most brilliantly under the Nguyen Dynasty, Tuong art was once considered the national drama.

Tuong was formed on the basis of the art of singing, dancing, music, performances and written literature. The most unique characteristic of Tuong is its heroic tragedy. The characters in the play represent different types of people, are conventional, stylized, symbolic and highly generalized, and full of heroic tragedy.

Typical characters in plays include: actresses, actors, generals, old men, flatterers, witches... Each type of character is divided into many different categories. Each play, each character is a lesson, an example of morality, especially loyalty to the king and patriotism.

The characters in the play have their own characteristics, personalities and backgrounds, and the audience can recognize each character when they appear on stage. The conventional technique is a consistent feature. Stylistic exaggeration is a principle of expression that requires linguistic elements to participate in the play such as: Movement, makeup, singing, speaking...

Tuong actors paint on their faces stylized masks symbolizing different types of characters that are clearly defined. Just by looking at the character, one can tell if he is loyal or dishonest, old or young...

Each color has its own meaning: Sky blue is used for scheming characters; moldy white is used for deceitful characters; striped faces are used for warrior characters; yellow is used for characters of monks, gods...

Tuong focuses on depicting the spirit of events and people, without going into meticulous details, using descriptive methods to attract and stimulate the audience's imagination to participate in creation and sympathize with the artist.

The costumes of the characters in Tuong opera are based on ancient costumes but are stylized to suit the stage. Pictured is the general's costume.

Popular types of costumes include: Mang; dragon chan; armor; soldier's shirt; mandarin's shirt; palace costume; belt; hat; shoes; beard... In the picture are the Dong general's costume (black) and the white Mang costume.

In traditional theater, props are mainly weapons. Generals use spears; old generals use large swords; female generals use twin swords; soldiers use bows, spears, and machetes.

Music plays a very important role in the art of Tuong. In addition to accompanying singing, dancing, and performing stage effects, Tuong music also expresses the characters' emotions in wordless performances and is a bridge between the characters' inner world and the audience.
