Working with authorities, the woman initially said she picked up the eggs while visiting a cemetery, but later changed her mind and said she accidentally found them while cleaning out of a hotel room.

Responding to VnExpress , the police and forest rangers of Con Dao district said that by observing with the naked eye, the eggs were of the turtle species. However, the authorities must send samples for testing to confirm for sure.

Green turtles are listed in the Red Book of Threatened and Endangered Species. The purchase and sale of green turtles for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited. Violators are subject to fines or criminal prosecution, depending on the nature and severity. Con Dao authorities have arrested and prosecuted a number of cases of possession of green turtle meat and eggs.
