Vingroup has just proposed to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to study the construction of a Can Gio - Vung Tau sea bridge.
According to Vingroup Corporation - Joint Stock Company - Ho Chi Minh City branch, this proposal was made in the context of Decision 1125 dated June 11, 2025 of the Prime Minister approving the adjustment of the general planning of Ho Chi Minh City to 2040, with a vision to 2060, which identified the development of modern transport infrastructure and strengthening intra-regional and inter-regional connectivity as one of the key strategic orientations.
Investment proposal in the form of BT
According to Vingroup, after Ba Ria - Vung Tau province merged into Ho Chi Minh City, the need to form a direct connection axis between coastal areas became urgent. The Can Gio - Vung Tau area has a strategic position in terms of marine economy, tourism and ecological urban development, but currently the transport infrastructure is still limited, mainly depending on ferries and roundabouts.
Investing in a bridge or road across the sea will significantly shorten travel time between the two areas, creating a new traffic corridor connecting functional areas in the city. The project will open up space for socio-economic development, trade, tourism and sustainable urbanization for the coastal area.
"Vingroup Corporation respectfully requests the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to allow it to research and invest in the Can Gio - Ba Ria - Vung Tau (old) sea route under the BT form. This policy is the first step to assess feasibility and serve as a legal basis for the next steps," the document stated.
Vingroup affirmed its readiness to accompany the city in realizing key transport infrastructure plans, contributing to improving regional connectivity and sustainable development of coastal space in Ho Chi Minh City.
Previously, on April 19, Vingroup Corporation started construction of the world-class Can Gio coastal tourist urban area with an area of 2,870 hectares and a population of nearly 230,000 people.
Can Gio is becoming an infrastructure center.
From a place considered a "trapped corner" of Ho Chi Minh City, without a direct road, Can Gio area is now transforming strongly to become the gateway and new center of Ho Chi Minh City in the 2025-2030 term.
Along with the sea reclamation project under active construction, other projects such as the intersection of Rung Sac road with Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway, Can Gio bridge, high-speed railway, Can Gio - Vung Tau sea-crossing bridge are also being researched and implemented...
Previously, the Department of Transport and Public Works of Ho Chi Minh City (now the Department of Construction) had researched and proposed a southern coastal road through Ho Chi Minh City connecting the coastal road of the Mekong Delta with the old Ba Ria - Vung Tau. This included an investment plan for a branch line of the sea-crossing bridge connecting Can Gio - Vung Tau district.
According to the Department of Construction, in the decision approving the road network planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, the Prime Minister identified the coastal road as one of the orientations for developing the local transport system, including a part of the southern coastal route passing through Ho Chi Minh City.
The Prime Minister requested the People's Committees of provinces and cities to review, adjust, and develop plans and projects in their localities to ensure consistency and synchronization with this plan.
