25,000-year-old cemetery of giant monsters discovered

(NLDO) - At the Langmannersdorf site in Lower Austria, giant piles belonging to at least five ice age monsters have been revealed.

According to Heritage Daily, a "monster cemetery" has just been discovered at the Langmannersdorf site in Lower Austria, Austria, which was once a hunting camp 25,000 years ago.

The new discovery includes giant bones piled in two piles, buried just 15 meters apart.

Archaeologists from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) have identified the bones as belonging to the giant ice age beast: the Mammoth.

The two piles of bones contained the remains of at least five large mammoths, as well as a number of stone and ivory tools.

The above tools are evidence that this "monster cemetery" was created by prehistoric people's hunting and butchering of mammoths.

Ivory spear tips show that prehistoric hunters not only consumed meat but also processed mammoth tusks on site.

Through DNA analysis, isotope analysis and radiocarbon dating, as well as comparing paleodemographic models, scientists have reconstructed a historical snapshot of this hunting camp.

The findings offer a rare glimpse into human life during the last ice age maximum, one of the harshest periods our ancestors experienced.

“The fact that we found not only individual skeletons here, but also heavily used areas where many animals were processed, exceeded expectations,” said researcher Marc Händel from the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The excavations in Langmannersdorf are part of the European MAMBA research project. The project's name MAMBA stands for “ Exploring Mammoth Bone Accumulations in Central Europe”.

The mammoth population declined dramatically at the end of the ice age and then disappeared forever.

Human population expansion - coupled with over-hunting - is believed to be the main cause of the monster's extinction, alongside major environmental changes.
