The path to becoming a billionaire of "Outstanding Vietnamese Farmer" in 2025

VOV.VN - With the desire to get rich on his homeland, from the first 100 chickens, Mr. Tran Xuan Son, a farmer in Nghia Hung commune (former Nghia Dan district, Nghe An province) has built an egg-laying chicken farm with a revenue of tens of billions of VND each year, creating jobs for many workers.

Consolidation of land plots to build farms

In the chicken farm in the middle of the vast sugarcane fields of Nghia Hung commune ( Nghe An ), Mr. Tran Xuan Son and his wife diligently pick up each large, round, shiny egg. Taking advantage of the break, Mr. Son began to share about the process of building the largest egg-laying chicken farming business in Phu Quy area, a place commonly referred to as the districts of Que Phong, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Nghia Dan and the old town of Thai Hoa, Nghe An province.

Like many families in the village, Mr. Son and his wife diligently farmed sugarcane fields. Although they worked hard, their annual income was not much. Many nights, Mr. Son tossed and turned, thinking, should he continue to work hard and be poor all his life? Then Mr. Son decided to use his family's 3,000m2 garden to raise livestock.

In 2001, with a small capital of 5 million VND, Mr. Son built a simple 300m² coop to raise 100 meat chickens. In 2004, he and his wife invested more capital to raise 800 chickens. But with almost no experience, the H5N1 flu epidemic caused the death of more than half of the chickens, making the couple devastated. In addition, at that time, his wife advised him to give up the idea of raising chickens and switch to raising pigs.

According to Mr. Son, this is the most difficult stage in the process of raising egg-laying chickens, but he is determined not to give up.

Then luck finally "smiled" on him. When the epidemic ended, the price of chicken eggs skyrocketed to more than 3,000 VND/egg. An extremely high price compared to that time. More than 400 chickens left after the epidemic laid eggs, helping Mr. Son earn a decent amount of money, with funds to invest and develop the farm.

To gain more experience in animal husbandry, Mr. Son participated in scientific and technical training courses of the Farmers' Association and researched through books, newspapers, the internet, and then visited many animal husbandry models in and outside the province. From there, Mr. Son realized that to raise large-scale animals, he needed to have a concentrated land fund. However, his family's land fund was only a few scattered sugarcane fields, so he thought about consolidating land to exchange plots. At that time, this was still a new thing, few people thought of it. He persistently went from house to house, convincing each household that had land to grow sugarcane adjacent to his family's fields. Finally, he gathered 0.7 hectares of adjacent land to build a farm.

Next, he completed the procedures to submit to the commune government for approval to change the purpose of using 0.7 hectares of agricultural land adjacent to the above plot from cultivation to livestock farming.

In 2014, Mr. Son and his wife borrowed 3 billion VND from the bank to invest in building a 1,000m² barn to raise 5,000 egg-laying chickens. Unlike most households at that time, he invested in "cold room" technology to raise chickens. But thanks to daring to do differently, Mr. Son became a pioneer in applying modern technology to raising chickens in Phu Quy land, Nghe An. According to Mr. Son, the advantage of the cold barn system is to keep the temperature and humidity stable, helping the chickens to be healthy, less sick, and have high-quality eggs. Although the initial investment was very expensive, the economic efficiency was much better than that of open barns.

To the "golden egg" goose

In 2022, Mr. Son continued to invest an additional 4 billion VND to expand and build another cold barn, increasing the total barn area to 2,400m², raising 23,000 chickens, of which 17,000 hens continuously lay eggs and 6,000 reserve chickens for the next batches.

To diversify his products, in addition to the white-pink egg-laying hens, Mr. Son also uses nearly half of his barn to raise the red-egg-laying hens. “Although this breed of hens produces eggs that are cheaper, they are preferred by bakeries, birthday cake shops and restaurants,” Mr. Son shared.

In order to minimize labor costs, he invested in an automatic chicken feeding machine. “In the beginning, it took workers 3-4 hours to feed the chickens, but now it only takes more than 1 hour to complete the job. Thanks to that, it saves both time and costs,” Mr. Son affirmed.

Not only investing in cold rooms for chickens, Mr. Son's chicken egg products also have a different value. He applies herbal preparations in feed, adds probiotics, ensuring healthy chickens, eggs rich in protein, no antibiotic residue. From there, Mr. Son's cold chicken farm model gradually affirms its value.

Thanks to bold investment, Mr. Son's family's chicken farm now produces nearly 3.9 million eggs each year. Through fairs, exhibitions and social networks, Mr. Son's family's chicken egg products quickly affirmed their brand and sold well both inside and outside the province. Thanks to that, the farm's chicken eggs were recognized as 3-star OCOP products from the end of 2023 and achieved VietGAP certification in 2024.

Thanks to that, each year the farm brings in revenue of 11-12 billion VND, with a profit after expenses of 1.2-1.5 billion VND. In addition to eggs, his family also sells about 8,000 chickens per year and 2,000 tons of decomposed chicken manure to provide to farmers for fertilizing plants.

Talking about this egg-laying chicken farm model, Mr. Dinh The Hien, Head of the Economic Department of Nghia Hung Commune, said: This is the most economically effective livestock model in the commune. Not only getting rich on his homeland, Mr. Son's egg-laying chicken farm also creates regular jobs for 5 workers with an income of 5.5 - 6 million VND/month, along with 12 - 15 seasonal workers with an income of 3 - 3.5 million VND/month. In particular, he also supports many poor households with breeding stock, food and techniques to help them escape poverty sustainably.

“With his practical experience and success, Mr. Son directly guides people in the area on how to raise laying hens in a biosafety manner, disseminates knowledge on disease prevention, and helps limit the risk of disease in the area. Many families have been successful after learning from his model, contributing to spreading the movement of modern, safe livestock farming,” Mr. Dinh The Hien added.

Thanks to that, from 2020 to now, Mr. Tran Xuan Son has continuously achieved the title of "Excellent Farmer and Business Household" at the provincial level. Recently, Mr. Son is the only person in Nghe An to be honored in 2025. Not only that, he is also on the list of Typical Advanced Models in patriotic emulation movements in Nghe An province in the period of 2020-2025.
