My Son Sanctuary Planning Links Cham Heritages

The plan to preserve, restore and renovate My Son Sanctuary (Thu Bon Commune, Da Nang City) is expected to not only resolve the problems that have existed for many years but also open up solutions to connect with neighboring Cham relics, contributing to elevating this world cultural heritage.

The planning for the conservation and promotion of the value of My Son relic site in Quang Nam province for the period 2008 - 2020 (Decision No. 1915 approved by the Prime Minister in 2008) has brought about important results, especially in the conservation of architectural ruins, but there are also some shortcomings. According to Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet, Deputy Head of the My Son Cultural Heritage Management Board (MB), the old planning was mainly for the core area, lacking service areas, leading to shortcomings in exploitation and management, so the task of planning for the conservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the special national relic My Son Temple Complex until 2035, with a vision to 2050 (Decision No. 1404 approved by the Prime Minister on June 28) needs to be more open, integrating cultural spaces, creating conditions for the construction of essential items.

"We recommend choosing a suitable location and integrating it into the new planning, and requesting a design in advance to get opinions from experts and management agencies, especially the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Once the planning is completed and has a legal basis, it can be implemented immediately," said Mr. Khiet. According to him, another important point is that the new planning needs to reserve space for the community to participate in developing typical services in the buffer zone, so that from this service area, people will have a livelihood from the heritage, accompanying the conservation work.

Notably, according to Mr. Khiet, for many years, the Management Board has wanted to build a statue garden to pay tribute to the ancestors who contributed to the My Son Sanctuary, but because it was not included in the planning, it has not been able to be implemented yet. Previously, the Management Board held a seminar on Building a statue garden for those who contributed to the preservation of the My Son temple complex , initially identifying four typical figures, including: researcher Henri Parmentier (1870 - 1949, French), Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dong (1907 - 1986), Architect Kazimier Kwiatkowski (Architect Kazik, 1944 - 1997, Polish) and former Secretary of the Quang Nam - Da Nang Provincial Party Committee Ho Nghinh (1915 - 2007).

TAKING MY SON AS THE CONNECTION CENTER

Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet assessed that My Son is a relic site with a special spiritual and cultural landscape, a Champa architectural ruin with many unsolved mysteries. However, compared to Hoi An or Hue, the number of visitors to My Son is not high, because this is a place to research and learn about culture. Therefore, there needs to be a worthy planning, both preserving and promoting the heritage value. Specifically, it is necessary to expand the space for research and planning of My Son relic site to surrounding areas in the direction of connecting with the system of historical and cultural relics within Duy Xuyen district (old), including Champa relics; taking My Son heritage as the center to promote and support the development of other relic chains in the city, contributing to enriching and diversifying tourism products for the locality.

Recently, at a meeting with Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi (August 20), Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet said that relevant units agreed to speed up the planning process on the basis of closely following the Prime Minister's Decision 72 (January 17, 2024) on the Planning of Quang Nam Province (old) to turn My Son into an attractive cultural tourist destination, linked with relics and scenic spots, while protecting the environment and promoting local socio-economic development.

My Son connects the chain of relics

According to Decision 1404 of the Prime Minister, the area for planning research for the My Son Temple Complex has an area of about 1,158 hectares, including the area for protecting the special national relic My Son of more than 30 hectares and the buffer zone. The scope of planning research includes related relics, such as: Tra Kieu, Bang An, Thu Bon river basin, archaeological sites, other Champa ruins. The subject of planning research is the system of temples, ruins and architectural - archaeological traces, mountain landscapes, streams... creating the typical value of the special national relic My Son Temple Complex; intangible cultural values related to the relic (festivals, customs, folk legends...).
