The province has attracted two stable operating cassava starch factories, including: Son La cassava starch factory, with a processing capacity of 40,000 tons of starch/year and BHL agricultural processing factory, with a processing capacity of 120,000 tons of starch/year. The two factories are currently purchasing over 220,000 tons of fresh cassava roots each year, accounting for over 41% of the province's total fresh cassava root output, but consumption in the form of raw starch has limited its economic value.

The birth of BHL Modified Starch Factory is a strong shift away from dependence on raw products. Different from normal starch, modified starch uses high technology, creating products with outstanding features such as heat resistance, high adhesion and bringing many times higher economic value. This high-quality product is an essential raw material for high-end industries such as: Food, pharmaceuticals, paper and textiles, helping the product to be competitive and widely exported into the international supply chain.

Mr. Vu Hung Binh, General Director of BHL Son La Group, shared: In 2016, we built a cassava starch processing factory with a capacity of 200 tons/day and night, then upgraded to 300 tons/day and night. Products from the factory are mainly exported to the Chinese market. The company continues to invest in deep processing and the BHL Son La Modified Starch Factory project is being implemented. We are very happy that the project was chosen by the province as a project to celebrate the success of the Provincial Party Congress and the 130th anniversary of the establishment of Son La province.

Construction started in early 2025, after nearly 8 months of urgent construction, BHL Son La Modified Starch Factory is ready to go into operation. The factory has a scale of 1.64 hectares in Mai Son Industrial Park, with a designed capacity of 300 tons/day and night, equivalent to 90,000 tons/year. The factory is equipped with two of the most modern production lines in Asia and an automated control system, creating more than 1,000 product codes in 5 main lines.
During the project implementation, BHL Food Ingredients Processing Joint Stock Company received the attention and close direction of the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, Provincial People's Committee and related departments and branches. Timely support from the government in completing investment procedures, granting construction permits and removing obstacles.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung, Director of the Provincial Industrial Park Management Board, said: The Board regularly inspects the site, supervises construction, and reviews environmental and labor safety items. At the same time, it provides maximum support for legal procedures for businesses.
During the equipment installation phase, Minh Duong Group (China), the technology transfer partner for the Company, sent engineers directly to support and provide technical advice, helping the factory operate safely and effectively.
The company pays special attention to building a tight production chain between the factory, cooperatives and farmers, helping to ensure a stable and high-quality source of cassava. At the same time, it brings practical benefits to farmers through product consumption, technical support and cultivation guidance, gradually forming a standard raw material area according to the high-tech agricultural orientation.
