Marine economic development - driving force for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta

(CT) - On June 27, in Kien Giang province, Can Tho University coordinated with Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee to organize a June 2025 seminar with the theme "Developing the marine economy - the driving force for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta" in both in-person and online formats. This is a quarterly activity within the framework of the Mekong Delta Sustainable Development Program with a vision to 2045 - SDMD 2045.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Secretary of the Party Committee, Chairman of the University Council of Can Tho University, emphasized: Our Party and State have had very clear strategic orientations on marine economic development, which are expressed in Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW dated October 22, 2018 of the Central Executive Committee on the strategy for sustainable development of Vietnam's marine economy to 2030, with a vision to 2045. This Resolution identifies "Striving to make Vietnam a strong maritime nation, with sustainable development, prosperity, security and safety at sea". Resolution No. 13-NQ/TW dated April 2, 2022 of the Politburo on the direction of socio -economic development, ensuring national defense and security in the Mekong Delta region until 2030, with a vision to 2045, continues to affirm the key role of the marine economy, in which Kien Giang is one of the strategic areas that need to be prioritized for investment and development. Today's discussion is a place to connect intellectuals, managers and businesses, to come up with specific proposals, turn vision into action, and turn potential into real development drivers.

At the workshop, delegates exchanged and discussed many issues related to the potential and strategic value of the marine economy for the Mekong Delta region and the whole country; Vietnam's marine economic development strategy; aquaculture and seafood exploitation: driving force for marine economic development; maritime transport and logistics: new opportunities for the development of the Mekong Delta's marine economy; development of green and sustainable marine tourism ...

The SDMD 2045 Forum is implemented according to the Government's policy, chaired by Can Tho University from 2022, aiming to connect domestic and international stakeholders, contributing to proposing orientations and solutions; at the same time promoting cooperation to build and implement practical programs and projects for sustainable development of the Mekong Delta.
