The more Vietnamese people use data, the more they feel the lack of it.

Officially launching 5G services from October 15, 2024, in less than a year, Viettel 5G has reached the milestone of 10 million users and is approaching the goal of reaching 12 million users in 2025.

According to a survey, 70% of customers who purchased Viettel 5G packages were impressed with the additional data offer. The average monthly data usage (DOU) per customer per 5G subscription doubled compared to 4G subscriptions and they continued to purchase additional daily data packages. This shows that Vietnamese people's demand for data usage is increasing.

The more Vietnamese people use data, the more they feel the lack of it.

According to telecommunications experts, this is a clear manifestation of the “expanded experience effect”. Users often think that the current traffic is enough, but when provided with more, they begin to form new behaviors.

This behavior is also recognized as a trend in developed markets around the world . In India, after commercializing 5G, Jio's average data usage per customer (DOU) increased 3 times. In Thailand and China, the total data consumption in the market increased 1.5 times. Statistics show that the widespread adoption of 5G quickly shapes data consumption habits. When 5G has wide enough coverage, abundant devices and accessible prices, users tend to quickly switch to more dense data consumption (through the use of HD/4K video, cloud gaming, XR), causing DOU to increase by one and a half to double in just a few years.

Viettel's rapid 5G infrastructure expansion campaign

Commercialization of 5G from October 15, 2024 with 6,500 BTS stations covering important areas. Viettel is the only network operator to deploy the first 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology in Vietnam, with super low latency of about 1ms and speed 10 times faster than 4G, supporting advanced applications such as self-driving cars and remote surgery.

Viettel's goal is to cover 99% of the population with 5G by 2030 with tens of thousands of new BTS stations by 2025, creating a breakthrough in the development of data subscribers and 5G services, maximizing the potential of telecommunications infrastructure and digital platforms.

Viettel determined to complete the installation of 22,000 new 5G broadcasting stations in 2025

According to the plan in 2025, Viettel will deploy 22,000 more 5G stations, cumulatively owning 29,000 5G stations, to expand coverage, improve 5G network quality, and maintain its No. 1 position in digital infrastructure in Vietnam. The number of new 5G stations is 3 times the number of Viettel stations at the time of service launch and 2 times the total number of 5G stations of all network operators serving in Vietnam (11,000 stations) as of June 2025, marking Viettel's record-breaking infrastructure development campaign.

"Increasing the number of 5G broadcasting stations by more than four times (from 6,500 stations to 29,000 stations) helps Viettel affirm its No. 1 position in telecommunications infrastructure in Vietnam. When completed, Viettel's 5G network will cover 90% of Vietnam's population, instead of only focusing on central areas, industrial parks or airports as it is now," said a Viettel representative.

5G network plays an important role in promoting comprehensive digital transformation in Vietnam, promoting the natural digital transformation process and opening up new values in the digital economy and developing a digital society. Viettel's expansion of 5G is a step forward in popularizing technology, contributing to the completion of the national digital infrastructure, thereby opening up new business models, promoting creative cooperation and creating conditions for application developers to exploit the potential of digital infrastructure. High-speed 5G network will be the foundation for innovative applications to explode, from online education, remote medicine to smart cities and automated industrial production.
