Never stop trying, never stop creating

Graduating from Hue University of Education, majoring in English Pedagogy, Ms. Duong fell in love with the green army uniform when she was recruited to work at the Information Officer School in 2006.

In the early days of entering the military environment, although she encountered many surprises, she quickly adapted to perform well in teaching. In 2008, she was one of the few military instructors in the country to be sent to Australia for training.

Here, she completed two courses including the English Curriculum Development Course (2011) and the Australian Department of Defence English System Grading Training Course (2020).

Having acquired good, new and modern teaching methods from her host country, Ms. Duong began to "incubate" many good ideas to apply to teaching at the Information Officer School.

Constantly trying, constantly being creative, friendly and gentle are not only the evaluations and comments of leaders and colleagues but also the admiration of many generations of students for the English teacher - Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Thi Thuy Duong after nearly 20 years of teaching at the Information Officer School.

The person who inspires the passion for English

In the trend of international integration and the modernization of the military communication system, the Information Officer School has continuously improved the foreign language capacity of both teachers and students to meet the requirements of exploiting and mastering modern information equipment and weapons.

Thanks to that, the staff, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Basic Sciences in particular and of the School in general have good English proficiency and are always ready to participate in international cooperation and defense diplomacy activities. To complete the professional tasks, the Department of Foreign Languages clearly identifies two key tasks: training the teaching staff and innovating foreign language teaching and learning methods.

To do this, the commander of the Basic Department always focuses on directing the innovation of textbooks, training programs, teaching methods and testing and evaluation methods. In his assigned position, Lieutenant Colonel Duong always encourages lecturers to promote the application of information technology in teaching, testing and applying the online classroom model combined with direct learning, building each lesson and each class with creative, flexible, attractive ideas, creating excitement for learners, contributing to arousing the "passion" for English for students.

Ms. Duong confided: "With the attention of the Party Committee, the School Board of Directors, the Party Committee, and the Faculty Commander, we have focused on implementing many new activities so that each comrade can promote his or her strengths in teaching English, suitable for the Military environment, especially teaching digital transformation through online learning management systems."

The application of the online learning system in English, which was conceived by Ms. Duong herself and implemented with lecturers in the Foreign Language Department, is very suitable for schools in the Army. This is a system of textbooks that is organized and decentralized according to the user's functions and tasks.

Since the online learning materials system was applied to the English teaching process at the Information Officer School, it has not only been positively received by officers and students, but has also aroused the creativity of the lecturers in the Foreign Language Department.

As Vice Dean of the Faculty, with her passion and dedication, Ms. Duong always closely follows the process of producing content for the digital learning materials system. Not only that, in addition to guiding young lecturers in the Faculty, Ms. Duong also actively participates in building the digital learning materials system, designing and recording lectures for the system.

Discussing her experience in inspiring students to self-study English, Ms. Duong shared: For each group of students, teachers need to have different teaching methods. First of all, teachers must be people who understand the psychology, need to have experience in teaching activities to change the content appropriately. For example, it is possible to divide the class into small groups of 5-6 students, organize games combined with reviewing the knowledge learned under the guidance of teachers, as a basis for timely adjustment, to best promote the abilities of the students.

To have good, quality classes is a process of serious self-improvement and self-training, and is also the result of many hours of trial teaching, through lectures organized tightly and systematically by the Faculty.

In addition, English club activities are also organized periodically every month and enhanced in competitions with many rich contents and forms. This is a useful and practical playground that gives students a healthy learning and playing environment, helping students review knowledge, practice skills, promote initiative and confidence in learning, gradually perfecting their own abilities.

It is also from these Clubs that the core members for the English Olympic Team of the Information Officer School will be discovered and trained.

According to Sergeant Le Tung Lam, a student of class DH29HQ - Battalion 14, shared: "Participating in the English club, under the guidance of teachers of the Foreign Language Department, has brought me many useful learning experiences. The club's activities not only help consolidate knowledge in class but also practice communication and presentation skills, and increase English reflexes. Thanks to regular and active participation in the club's activities, I myself am much more confident when entering the army's English Olympic round."

Through the activities of the English club as well as the guidance, support, encouragement and inspiration from Ms. Duong and other teachers in the department. Sergeant Le Tung Lam was honored to win the Third Prize of the 2024 Army English Olympic - a meaningful milestone in the soldier's journey of learning and training.

With all her love for the profession and enthusiasm, Ms. Duong always believes that she will use all her abilities and accumulated experience to contribute to laying the most solid bricks for the journey of knowledge for future young officers.

The lectures and activities built by Ms. Duong in the most natural way have spread to students the spirit of enthusiasm for learning, passion for English, thereby improving English proficiency and promoting personal creativity in research, accessing documents fully and accurately and exploiting and using effectively all kinds of military information equipment and weapons, contributing to meeting the requirements of building the army, the Information and Communications Corps to move straight towards modernization and international integration.
