Thailand attracts investment in films

In recent years, Thai cinema has gradually established its own position in the international market. This success comes from the proactive innovation and efforts to implement solutions to attract investment in film production and development by relevant organizations.

In the first 6 months of 2025, Thailand had 279 foreign film projects filmed and produced in the country, bringing in an estimated 2.87 billion baht. Meanwhile, revenue from films is expected to reach 10 billion baht for the whole year of 2025, exceeding the initial target of 7.5 billion baht. India, South Korea, Japan and China are the countries with the most film projects co-produced and produced in Thailand in 2025, followed by investors from the US and the online platform Netflix.

The attraction of investment and film production in Thailand comes from the innovative policies supporting the country's film development in recent years. Thailand has a specific orientation to become a leading filming destination in Asia. Therefore, for many years, this country has continuously issued policies and mechanisms to support film production. Specifically, Thailand has implemented a program to refund foreign film crews from 15-30% of filming costs in this country. This incentive program plays an important role in attracting big-budget films, bringing major producers to make films in Thailand. That is the reason why Thailand was chosen as the place to produce the new part of "Jurassic World" or "The White Lotus" in 2025.

In addition, Thailand also creates conditions to attract talent and invest in filmmaking human resources. Specifically, the Thai Drama Writers Association (TSA) has implemented strategies to enhance creativity and help Thai films find a foothold in the global market. In particular, TSA organizes script projects to select and produce films. About 279 scripts were sent to TSA and 30 works by young people were selected to develop into actual projects. Mr. Khathahat Busaphaket, Chairman of TSA, said that these projects focus on improving the skills of screenwriters while building a sustainable ecosystem for the industry. Quality scripts are selected, and there is support for clear production and distribution mechanisms, gradually improving the quality of Thai films and better accessing the international market.

Producer Chang Shin Ae believes that to attract investors, the script must have new, impressive content and capture good consumer trends. Therefore, projects from TSA have created conditions for screenwriters to be proactive in creating products that have their own identity but are also suitable for global tastes. Accordingly, Thailand has gradually created many films that have made an impression on the international market such as: "Master of House" (photo), "The Paradise Of Thorns"... In which, "Master of House" holds the highest position in the ranking of non-English-speaking films on Netflix worldwide. At the same time, the film is also in the Top 10 list in 63 countries around the world .

In addition, Thailand is also making efforts to build many film events to attract investors. Specifically, Pattaya has signed a memorandum of understanding with 12 international film organizations to support Pattaya to become the center of the film industry in Thailand. In the Pattaya City Development Plan 2022-2027, Pattaya will be a one-stop service center for the film and creative industry. Specifically, a 640,000m2 film studio will be built to serve the film industry, while local educational institutions will enhance teaching and training programs to support the film industry. In parallel, the Pattaya Film Festival has been held since 2023 and has gradually become an event attracting many international film studios, production units, directors and actors to participate.
