Bringing water puppetry to the World Heritage site of Con Son

The solid water pavilion built on Kiep Bac Lake becomes a unique stage where vivid wooden puppets tell village stories in the space of a World Heritage Site.

On the afternoon of October 5, at Kiep Bac Lake area, within the framework of the Con Son - Kiep Bac Autumn Festival 2025, a unique water puppetry performance took place, attracting a large number of people and tourists from all over to watch.

The program is performed by 15 artists from Hai Phong City Traditional Theater, bringing the audience unique performances right in the space of Con Son - Kiep Bac World Heritage Site.

From the blue lake surface, vivid wooden puppets recreate stories of Vietnamese villages, labor and festivals, where folk art blends with ancient landscapes, creating a cultural picture imbued with the soul of the countryside.

Although taking place at the end of the day, the program still attracted a large number of locals and tourists to enjoy, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere by Kiep Bac Lake.

During the 45-minute program, the program introduces 15 traditional water puppetry performances, reflecting historical legends, daily life, customs and beliefs of residents of the Red River Delta.

Many typical plays such as: Buffalo Fighting Festival, Brave Soldier and Sea Devil, Legend of Neaki, Dream of the Green Frog, Heroic Spirit of Bach Dang River... bring viewers moments of both relaxation and pride.

The “Buffalo Fighting Festival” is one of the highlights of the program. On the shimmering water, two buffalo puppets with proud posture and curved horns rush at each other to the bustling sound of festival drums.

Not only is it an art program serving the festival, water puppetry is also an affirmation that traditional cultural values are still enduring, vibrant and continue to spread in contemporary life. This folk art form promises to become a unique highlight of this year’s autumn festival, contributing to promoting Vietnamese identity to domestic and international friends.

The water puppet show performed by Hai Phong Traditional Theater and Thanh Hai and Hong Phong water puppet troupes will continue to be performed at Kiep Bac Lake until October 12.
