The Thai team lost 1-2 to Uzbekistan in the 1/8 round of the 2023 Asian Cup on the evening of January 30.
This defeat marks the second time the Golden Temple team has stopped at the round of 16 of the Asian Cup and has become the last team in Southeast Asia to stop at this round.
However, according to the world rankings statistics site Football Rankings , the loss to Uzbekistan still helps the Thai team rank number 1 in Southeast Asia with 101st place in the world.
After good performances at the Asian Cup, the Thai team jumped 12 places on the FIFA rankings, from 113th to 101st, with points increasing from 1176.75 to 1207.31 points and surpassing the Vietnamese team.
Thailand is ranked No. 1 in Southeast Asia because coach Philippe Troussier and his team were eliminated from the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup, falling from 94th to 106th in the world. This is also the lowest position that the Vietnamese team has received in 5 years since parting with coach Park Hang Seo.
Notably, in addition to Thailand, the Indonesian team also increased their ranking when they won a ticket to the 1/8 round of the Asian Cup for the first time, from 146th to 144th in the world. Malaysia alone dropped 2 places in the ranking, from 130th to 132nd in the world.
After finishing the 2023 Asian Cup, the Thai team will aim to perform well in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Thailand is in Group C and will have two matches against South Korea in March.
