Auto market 2025: Registration fee reduction unlikely to repeat

Steady sales growth and big promotions from car manufacturers are the main reasons why the 50% reduction in registration fees is unlikely to be applied this year.

Market growth, no need for policy 'boost'

The policy of reducing 50% of registration fees for domestically assembled cars has become a familiar stimulus measure in recent years. However, 2025 will likely be the first time in 5 years that the market will not have a similar incentive from the Government , as business indicators are all at a positive level.

According to a report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), total market sales in September reached 30,688 vehicles, up 18% over the previous month. In the first 9 months of the year, 251,421 cars of all kinds were sold, up 11.5% over the same period last year. Of which, 119,918 were assembled vehicles (up 6% over the third quarter of 2024) and 131,503 were imported vehicles (up 17%).

Vietnam's auto market recorded stable growth without needing support policies from the Government.

This is in stark contrast to previous years, when tax breaks were often introduced during market slowdowns or downturns. For example, the September-November incentive last year helped sales soar, peaking at 44,200 units in November 2024. Given the current growth momentum, a similar stimulus measure is seen as unnecessary.

Car companies proactively launch big incentives

Even without government support, consumers still have the opportunity to buy cars at good prices thanks to competitive promotions directly from manufacturers. Many brands even generously support 100% of registration fees for key products.

The new white Toyota Camry is moving on the road.
For the first time, Toyota Camry received a 50% discount on registration fees from the manufacturer, worth up to 77 million VND.

Below are some notable promotions in October:

  • Toyota: 100% registration fee support for Vios, Veloz Cross and Avanza Premio. Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross and Hilux models are supported by 50%. In particular, the Camry model is the first to receive a 50% registration fee discount, equivalent to a reduction of 61-77 million VND.
  • Mitsubishi: 100% registration fee discount for the Xpander and Xpander Cross duo. The Xforce model receives 50-100% fee support, while the Attrage and Triton are also supported up to 100%.
  • Suzuki: 100% registration fee support for XL7 Hybrid and Jimny, with total promotional value up to 95 million VND.
  • Subaru: The program supports 100% of the registration fee and 100% of the registration fee for the two highest-end Forester versions, with a total value of up to 308 million VND. The Crosstrek model also receives a maximum incentive of 258 million VND.
  • Hyundai: The Palisade model receives the highest promotion value of up to 200 million VND. The Accent, Stargazer and Creta models also have incentives of up to 50 million VND.

Outlook for year-end car buyers

Given the current market environment, consumers who are planning to buy a car should probably not wait for a reduction in registration fees from the Government. Instead, taking advantage of the extensive promotional programs implemented by car manufacturers is the best opportunity to own a car at a reasonable cost in the last months of 2025.
