Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide and can strike suddenly even in young people.

Therefore, stroke prevention plays a vital role, and surprisingly, just one small habit each day can significantly reduce this risk.

Flossing not only helps keep your teeth cleaner, but also has great health benefits, especially in preventing strokes.

Experts say this small habit helps remove bacteria and plaque between teeth - where toothbrushes are hard to reach - thereby helping reduce inflammation and protect brain blood vessels.

Research presented recently at the American Heart Association's International Stroke Conference found that flossing at least once a week significantly reduced the risk of stroke caused by blood clots from the heart and irregular heart rhythms (atrial fibrillation) - two factors that increase the risk of stroke.

Researchers at the University of South Carolina (USA) followed 6,278 people for 25 years, of which 65% of the participants flossed every week. The results showed that flossing helps reduce the risk of ischemic stroke by 22%, atrial fibrillation by 12% and especially reduce the rate of stroke caused by blood clots from the heart by 44%, according to the website of the American Heart Association AHA .

Why use dental floss to prevent stroke?

“Our research shows that flossing is an important part of a healthy lifestyle,” said Professor Souvik Sen, chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of South Carolina, who led the study. He added that previous studies have found that oral infections and gum disease are linked to damage to small blood vessels in the brain and plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lead to stroke.

Dr. Karen Furie, Director of the Department of Neurology at Brown University Health School of Medicine (USA), emphasized: Dental floss helps remove food debris that brushing cannot completely clean. If not removed, these debris cause gingivitis, leading to inflammation in the body, affecting blood vessels and increasing the risk of stroke.

In addition, flossing also helps diabetics control blood sugar. For diabetics, flossing is very necessary. Gum disease can make controlling blood sugar more difficult. Regular flossing helps maintain healthy gums, thereby supporting better blood sugar control, according to the Times Of India.

Additionally, flossing offers many other benefits, including boosting immunity, aiding weight control, preventing bad breath, protecting gums, and preventing tooth loss.

According to experts, in addition to maintaining a stable weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol, proper oral hygiene, especially regular flossing, is also an important measure to help protect the heart, prevent strokes, and control blood sugar long-term.
